5.25 or 6.5 components in the front?

And what size speaker for rear fill?

I want to say stock size is 5.25", but one can fit 6.5" with little modification if any at all...

depends on what kind of speakers you go with... when i did a 330ci I went with 5.25 bm quart Q series speakers... I think the 6.50 in that series would have been too large, but in a lower line mb quart a 6.50 would have fit. in the rear 6.50... I have a lot of pics of the install, let me know if you want them....

and they fit pretty well i think the shop charged me 3 dollars to modify the hole to fit them. I mean it was very easy to fit them. But i know if i had gone utopia the 6.5 would have been very difficult to fit in the front. Our speakers are like 5 and 3/8 or something weird since they are metric. I believe any 5.25 speaker will fit and most 6.5 will fit. Hope this helps.

Hey bender post those pics please, I was wondering the same thing last night. Would the MB Quart Q's fit the sedan in the 5.25" or would 6.5" fit with litle modification? Thanks for your help.

BTW did you ever get the W7 hooked up with the JL amp?

Those JL speakers in the front dont just screw in? It looks like there are 3 home made brackets on them.

Will the 5.25 screw in w/o brackets or modifications?

no mods, no, but you will need an adp. of sorts. the stock spkr size is 160mm right between a 5.25 and 6.5, so you will need to make something to fit. I did what I did because I didn't want any perm. mods to the door panel...

Aren't they 6"?

the exact size is 160 mm, which is 6.3 inch.
I have Boston pro in front, which measure exactly 160mm.
The fit perfectly in the pre-cut hole, but I also needed brackes to fix them securely.

What is the size of the midrange speaker in the picture above ?

Thanks
Hans

Ok hold on here, I see a discrepency.. could it be that coupe & sedan have different size kick panel speaker size? Most people who say 160mm (6.5ish) are coupe owners. Most people who say 5 1/4" are sedan.. could it be that sedans get smaller speakers?

Ive installed 5 and 5.25 speakers in both my coupe and my sister's sedan...both sizes fit perfectly.

the mids in the pics are 6" JL's. They fit right on the plastic lip of the frame from the factory speaker, which is actually removable as well. I just flipped the outer ring from the grill upside down & used the factory holes w/ some quick brackets I made & put a drop of epoky on each screw head to keep them from coming lose. I have seen some adaptors that I think will work in some of my catalogs that you could use for either a 5.25 or 6.5 but i never purchased any to verify it. I might be doing this shortly because I'm thinking og going back to my diamond audio hex, which i had in my previous car.

I have a 1999 323i Sedan. I have replaced the factory speakers with a/d/s/ (http://www.adst.com) speakers in my e46 and they fit perfectly. Actually, I think that a/d/s/ makes the OEM speakers that come in your stock (non HK) bimmer. Their high-end line of speakers are far superior than the OEM speakers.

Here's what I have:

Front:
a/d/s/ 345is (5.25" woofer with separate tweeter)

Rear deck:
a/d/s/ 336im (6.5" coaxial)

IMO, you will want to spend more money on your front speakers since they are your main sound stage. The rears are more for filler.

I would also suggest upgrading the amp. I am considering upgrading myself to the a/d/s/ P640 amp. I heard that it connects to the stock wiring harness on the bimmers.

I got my speakers through www.caraudioshopping.com (http://www.caraudioshopping.com).

a/d/s/ stuff is really expensive though. I've also heard that MBQuart fit the bimmers nicely and they're probably more affordable.

Not really very affordable as almost everything for our cars. :thumbdwn: Tha pair is in the 500 dollars range for a high end component system for our front doors.

Infinity Kappa's seem to be popular, thats the way i'm leaning for speakers. Not a bad price too, 200 bucks a pair. I want to get a "Big Block" JL 450/4 amp for them.

I've got a full set of infinity kappa perfects ready to go into my car... just waiting for my amp to come in the mail. purchased a kicker 5 channel. i've got the 5 1/4's in the front and 6 1/2's in the back. hopefully they will fit fine..

Stock speakers in my sedan are 160 in front and 165mm in the rear.
I have a set of Kappa's 5,25 inch compo to replace the fronts.
Surely I'll lose some kickbass, but most of the 6,5"speakers have tooooo big magnets and the door has too little clearance.

This seems a very common question. the answer is as follows:
If you have a coupe you can get almost all 6.5" mid bass's in the door, if you have a sedan/saloon, most people go for the 5.25" because the door trim is not as deep. I have 6.5" infinity Kappa perfect 6.1's in the front door of my sedan/saloon, the hole size is perfect but you can not get the door panel back on. I had to mount the speakers from the front and lose the "stealth" look.

Sealed the hole with Innotech deadingmats and moulded it so its hard as a rock.

i just installed the infinity perfect 6.1 & ran new 12 ga wire in my 2001 330i.
at first the speaker would not fit in my sedan but after some minor adjustments the perfects fit perfect
you have cut out some of the plastic on the inner side of the door panel then use the bracket from the original hk speaker, its glued to the speaker but not hard to remove.. any questions you can email me at bimmer583@aol.com

yeah... modification is required... an advice to people installing in the rear deck though... if you're getting kappa perfect's get the 6.52... the 6.53's won't fit because the tweeter sticks out too much...

if you get the perfects the tweeters fit in all stock locations. (front & Rear)

How does everyone like their components? JL? Boston acoustic?

bimmer88
06-27-2004, 08:32 PM
i used to have a set of bostons pro's in my previous car. Now i'm running all kappa perfects... i've heard a lot of other types of component sets but i'd say boston sounded the best...

pro or z?

the pro series was great already... the z series is higher so it should sound better... from what i heard, they weren't all that much different though...
