What kind of SC setup do you have?

I have an AA Stage 1 turbo on my 98 M3 and I normally get 190-200F. Highest it has seen is 220F during summer.

From what I have seen, 240F is normal for supercharging setups but E46 engines run a tad hotter than the E36 engines. I drove a RMS Stage 1 E36 M3 at the track and it got up to 270F and the car was losing alot of power and coolant temp. was starting to get very hot.

I would look into getting an oil cooler for your application.

Thanks for the reply. I know there are folks at Bimmerforums who posted their numbers as well. Thought I start a similar thread here...

I have AKA SKI. Peak temp was achieved at my last track event in Laguna Seca, Nov 2003. Since I have the SC, I have attended ButtonWillow and California Speedway (inner field + oval) too. But I didn't have the gauges until LS.

Oil cooler mod is definitely on my list now, since I attend track events quite frequently. Also, planning on using either a 10w40 or 10w60 once to try out. I know the grade of the oil doesn't lower the temperature but at 248F, shouldn't 10w40 perform better than 5w30?

Does that RMS Stage 1 E36 M3 has an intercooler as well? Also, which track did you attend and which month?

No the RMS SC M3 that I drove had no form of intercooling. This was at Las Vegas back in '99 and ambient temp. was 90F.

The European Project car M3 tracks his car and gets about 220F max! He uses 15w-50. The temp. sending unit is the drain plug.

That would be Pablo's black E36 M3. He was at several CCA events that I attended as well. My average at BW and CS was about 105~110F. Hot summer. LS was slightly cooler nonetheless. I am actually on the quest to find out the peak temperature that BMW/Castrol has tested on the 5w30 oil. Nothing constructive so far. Castrol replied as confidential info. BMW told me to speak to my service manager. Hrm...
