I might sell my car...

There's a fairly good chance I might move into D.C. by mid-summer. I'm in a bit of a dilemma, however, because I want to keep my car as far as possible from D.C.'s sh*tty streets and moron drivers. I initially wanted to find a place in the metro area (probably Arlington) with covered parking, but that has yet to work out. Garage parking in D.C. comes with a hefty monthly price that, which on top of the insane cost of living, I could never afford (...and have a life at the same time, that is). So, I'm curious if there are many onboard that live in D.C. that don't have the liberty of garaging their BMW. If so, how has it worked out thus far? What measures are you forced to take to protect your car. Would I be making a serious mistake bringing my car into the city?

BTW, I'd probably be moving into either the Dupont W., Adams Morgan, Mt. Pleaseant, or Columbia Heights area.

My girlfriend lives in Dupont so I am there every weekend and a couple nights during the week. She has a parking space in the alley behind her place that she pays $150 a month for. When I am down we move her civic to the street and I park in her spot. There are also an S4, 911, C32, FX35 so I am in good company. On the street I have seen cars get hit mutiple times. Parking is tight and your bumpers will look like crap. In all honesty if I lived downtown I would sell my car and get something that I cared less about.

Bicycle works great downtown.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the option of selling my car and getting something I care less about. Either that or trying to find a place just outside of DC that will offer garage parking. I'd be too annoyed having my car in DC and coming out to a new ding or scratch each week.

Bikes aren't really an option...I work well outside of the DC and have about a 30 minute commute by car.

get parking in arlington somewhere, and use the metro/bike/public transportation once you're in the city. only take your car into the city for nights out on the town.

I agree with people above. i would look for a parking spot in Rosslyn near the metro or Ballston (Large garages there). I only take my car into the city to go out, and then I usually try to find a garage, since parking in the city can leave you with screwed up bumpers and rims.

I live in downtown DC (Dupont) with my fiance. I have a parking spot behind my building (in the alley). My car sits next to a row of 10 large garbage cans. Those cans are dragged past my car (and several others) on a weekly basis. Also, homeless people are constantly going through the garbage back there. In three years, my car has never been touched.

P.S. If I didn't have a parking spot (and had to park on the street), I would not have gotten this car.

Why not move closer to work and just drive into DC when you want? That's assuming you want to keep your car. DC itself isn't bad (most places that is), it's just that street parking is really tight and people can't parallel park for sh!t around here.

I live in DC, Logan Circle and rent a parking spot from the Washington Plaza Hotel for 150 per month. I've never had a problem.
