View Full Version : ASA + SS Headers = BOING

I just had SS headers installed on my car and I felt the power gain immediately. It feels like the car just WOKE UP :yikes:

IMO its definately worth the money to get a set of headers, the throttle feels much more responsive, the lag is almot 100% gone. Accelaration has been improved in all the gears, no loss of low end torque as far as I can tell. I will dyno the car next week just to verify the results.

The exhaust note has changed slightly, keep in mind that I am still running around with the resonators and stock muffler. The sound is just amazing, it has a nice stock ROAR to it, especially as you climb the rpm band.

I was driving around just a few minutes ago when a SRT4 tested me. Well since I was in the middle of the woods just driving around I figured why not. 1st gear, he is 1 car behind. 2nd gear 3 cards behind. Once I got to around 5500rpm in 3rd the guy must have been like 10 or more cars back, thats when I ended it but he still wanted more. No point in that at all.

The bad thing is that I had no CEL's for about 300 miles until tonight. I am getting P0420 and P0430 that are directly related to the missing cats. At this point im not sure if im going to swap out the resonators for magnaflow cats or just get some o2 simulators.

Thanks to JLEVI for hooking me up on the headers. He was really helpfull in getting to me really quick as I could not wait to install them.

Thanks Again

Fawk! And I was just planning on dropping 1-2k in some custom stereo setup for the car. No point in doing that when I can make the car faster by investing that money into the headers... :banghead:

:werd: headers are the best mod with supercharger. ASA + headers catback exhaust rocks

Get the cats if you can to get that cel off. the weather here is about 100F all the time. however with the ASA SK1 + Headers + catback exhaust.. (my cars a step) i feel the second gear slipping, at times when the weather is colder at night i feel the third gears slipping. Think its time i got the Level ten upgrade.

Slipping when its cold out? I am getting the Level ten torque converter, and maybe the hydro. It 2k for both packages at the same time little more when done seperate. Both require the same labor, almost. I want stage 2

What is CEL? I did a search & came up empty.

Also, Is this a good alternative & better performance upgrade than the Exhaust upgrade & not headers?

Have you tried to reset it?

I reset mine this morning and went on a 150 mile drive today. NO CEL;s so far, hopefully it will stay off. I have not done any research on the O2 simulators yet.

I forgot to mention that during my 150 mile drive I really got to enjoy my car again. The smooth power from the ASA kit is unreal, I can feel the added power from the second I step on the gas. The sound from the headers just wants me to drive for hours listening to the exhaust note

^ I heard somewhere that you loose a bit of boost pressure with the addition of headers due to less back pressure in the exhaust system. Is this true? :dunno:

If so, I'm sure you're not loosing power, I'm guessing it probably just takes less boost pressure to achieve the same results, which makes me wonder if you can up the boost to the previous pressure level with a pulley upgrade or something, thusly giving you even more power without any additional 'harm' (only word it could think of) to the engine.

I hope that all made sense. Thanks. :hi:

I will have to check my boost gauge to see if I am losing anything, but as far as I can tell I have gained and lost nothing.

My boost gauge is not working right now

That sucks your gauge isn't working right now. :(

What I'm trying to say is that you may loose some boost pressure, but still gain hp. Like it makes everything more effiecient (sp?). :dunno:

I see, no oil being pumped = very bad. I thought BMW's had some kind of sensor that immediately turned off the engine when the oil pump fails?
I think you only lose like 0.1 of boost, but gain more HP from the headers than you lose. I dont think they make pulleys that are 0.1 smaller.

Anyways congrats on the return of your car; you should make some movies of it sometime

edit- so you had to get a new engine? did you have to pay for it or no?

Solid

What were the symptoms right before it happned? Did you get really high oil temp or an oil light?

I second the vid request. I'm thinking about headers too, but i'm not a big fan of a very loud car (it's not for everybody i guess).

The oil pump failed on my old engine :thumbdwn:

When we removed the old engine, we discovered the oil pump sprocket just dangling there, same thing happened to Tim330i.

Turns out that the nut holding the sprocket in place can vibrate itself loose and completely back off the bolt.

Looks like its a bad design from BMW.

I was on the highway cruising around 55 - 60 mph when I noticed the RED oil light warning, about 10 seconds later the motor died. I used the speed to pull off the exit ramp, fortunate for me it was only a few feet away. I checked the oil levels and everything was fine, tried to crank the motor over but had no luck. Once I got back into my garage I noticed the damage :thumbdwn:

Yes! but trying to find some is a biatch! My local tuner built some for his Z3 with Dinan SC and I asked him for get some for my car and said he can't this is his quote:
"Hello, I just heard from my software engineer at Dinan, I can’t make a simulator as the signal is not the same or just one signal that the ECU is looking for.

It will not work. You will get a code but that’s about it."

So I guess I am going to need cats when I get my headers, or unless anyone can procure an O2 Sim. I am going to email Samir and get his thoughts. I really don't want cats. I will keep everyone posted with his reply.

The oil pump is located on the lower right hand side of the engine block if you are looking directly towards the car. I know there is a DIY of bimmer forums somewhere, but its for the e36 models.
