The other day I had 3/4 of a tank full when I stopped by the Auto Zone and picked up a can of NOS Octane Booster. I put it in my tank and went to the neaest station and filed up my tank. Two days later my tank dropped just below the 3/4 tank, I then went to the Union 76 and got some racing gas and topped it off. It took 5.2 Gals... After driving around for a few miles, the car felt like a whole new car and guess what??? Almost all of the Power dip I had at 4000 RPM'S vanished. I could not say it all vanished but I would say a good 80-90 % is gone. You can barely feel the dip now. I take it that the dip is from the timing pulling back because of the poor fuel we have here in the U.S. Must have been the Knock sensors in the ECU.. With some software tuning and my light flywheel this car should rock after. I'm guessing 0-60 in Mid 4's after.. :woot:

:werd: I fill 1/4 tank 100 Octane and 3/4 tank 91 Octane at a minimum. Sometimes I go 1/3 tamk 100 Octane. Makes my ESS run much better. Still have a bit of a 4000 RPM dip. I am hoping that headers cure that somewhat.

I have a bottle of the NOS (street version) octane booster but haven't used it yet. I remember some post where a guy with a SC dynoed with 20hp more just by running a octane booster. I don't see how it would help the 4K dip though.

Is the NOS brand stuff safe to use in our bmw's? I might start stocking up on this stuff and use it at every fill up :yikes:

That is what I used but I also used 5.2 Gals of Racing Fuel from Union 76 as well after it came back down 3/4 tank.. Difference is amazing but fuel is costly.

wait.. do all 76 carry racing fuel?

No, only a select few @ $5.99/gallon :yikes:

What are the side effects of running racing fuel, besides it putting a hole in your pocket?

The now infamous "dip" @ 4K has to do with the ECU pulling timing at that specific RPM, where the resonance valve switches over. I think the dip was programmed into the timing table since the "switchover" creates a surge of airflow into the cylinders...pulling the timing would ensure the motor does not ping momentarily, while the ECU adjusts the fuel trim to compensate for the valve being fully open. By using higher octane fuel, this would be somewhat minimized.

(this is just speculation, I'm not saying this is 100% why the dip exists)

As long as it's unleaded race fuel, there are no side effects. It just allows the ECU to advance the timing farther, which creates more torque, and subsequently more HP.

Thats gotta be expensive.

Been running race fuel at the tracks (not referring to drag strips) for $5.25 a gallon. Used to be $5. Race fuel beats any octane boosters in the market. I have been using Trick octane booster for a while. Even wrote a review on Rennsport. It certainly burns better with a smoother idle. However, dynos show no significant increase in performance.

If you have been running 91 all these while, you won't see an immediate effect after putting in 100. The ECU does take a while to adapt. It took the ECU one hot session of 25mins of track driving before actually using 100 octane to its optimum. Afterwhich, the ride is SWEET!

Do we get stronger, not really but do we feel better?? Yes.. I could not afford to put racing gas in at over $5 per Gallon every few days. There is a good difference with mixing though and unless there is a Union 76 nearby, one would spend an arm and a leg between gas and travelling to a gas station that has this fuel.

That's how much regular unleaded fuel costs in Finland, where I'm from...

Hurray Finnish Government!! :woot:

does NOS octane booster do anything for cars without superchargers? My friend keeps telling me to buy it when we go to autozone, I think its just cause it says NOS on the bottle and he's being a dumba$$.

Investment is under $10... They have better stuff in Japan.. Had tried this small black bottle before on my car in Taiwan and the stuff works really good. Will post name of it within a few days. That stuff works good for sure...
