What is the difference in using the radio install or the trunk install in terms of features?

None... the features are the same, where, how and to what do you connect the ice>Link module to is different.

So basically, the only downside to using the trunk mount is that I have to run the extension cable into the cabin somewhere, but otherwise, it's exactly like using the radio interface, but w/o all the hassle of pulling the rado out?

I leave mine in the back of my X5. Worked great until I had to update the firmware. You can only navigate the icelink menus from the radio. So you either have to work real fast, or call Dension to have them walk you through the button push sequence. I called them and talked to Chase, took him a few mins to walk me through. That is the only downside as far as I can tell.
