Sorry to probably do another :repost: but i've searched the forum and still have questions regarding superchargers for the 330

I noticed that the AA supercharger is 6500 and the ESS supercharger is 5900. Which is more reliable and suggested? They are both pretty complete and seem like reputable companies. I am torn between them- they put out about the same power albeit with different blower designs. Are there any other S/C's out there?

Also, a question regarding the 323/328 vs. the 325/330. Why the huge sound difference? The 323/328 sound like turbines and silky smooth whereas the newer models have a much more pronounced growl to them. I know the engine size difference makes matters--but they don't sound even close to the same! I drove my friends 328Ci and actually preferred the more muted, turbine like whine to it- and the power difference, while there, didn't seem big at all. We are both manuals, albeit his is much more modded than mine- it's a Dinan Signature car whereas all mine has is an intake and exhaust.

Thanks for the input!

Take a look at the ASA setup, try the FI forums for more info

plus the ASA supercharger just came out with the new, very large, intercooler! which they say adds like 10 HP with no additional tuning.

Thanks, any input on the engine sound/tone question?

Hi

The reason for the sound difference is that BMW introduced the 323 and 328 with a much muted sound in order to reduce noise. BMW later found out that the buyers wanted more and a sportier sound; hence the new versions got a totally different tune. This is primarily sound tuning and doesn’t have much to do with engine performance.

Also please remember that the 323 is actually a 2.5 litre engine, and was only designated 323 because it was a downgraded version of the 325, at least regarding HP (specified at 170, but often producing 180-190 HP). The change was made in order to get more torque. The 2.8 litre engine replaced the 2.5 as the top engine, but because of German insurance groups, was quoted as producing 193 HP, but almost all produces above 200 HP. With the introduction of the new 325 and 330, they changed the sound scheme and because of Double Vanos and other improvements, BMW was able to quote more HP, without sacrificing torque.
