View Full Version : Dynoed my car....disappointed

Well I dynoed my car today...
it was 101 degrees F, and using 97 octane fuel.
I was hoping for a bit more power but I guess the heat really is a major factor!
Max Torque 248.6 @ 5715 rpm
Max HP 217.6 @ 6337 rpm

I think that solidifies the FMIC argument, I need to get one. On my best dyno run (80 F), I made 248 RWHP and 223 TQ. Now that it is very cold outside, I'm certain I am making more than that (butt dyno) If I can only get Cartech to make an E46 FMIC for the Vortech S/C?? :woot:

Kevin,
Just curious, is that 97 RON?
Also, I am guessing humidity has to play a part in this.

AA SC does include a FMIC.
Regarding FMIC for your unit, for curiosity sake, if you can log the IAT numbers that post them here, that will be great. I requested that JimBOT does the same thing as well.
I may have pointed you to Bimmerforums where some one retrofitted the CarTech FMIC. IMO, it can be done on an E46. It is not exactly rocket science. It requires some plumbing experience and a basis for intuitive thinking. Get the kit and find a competent shop to do the job.

is your car a 330 or 325?

You should try finding a Dynojet out in your area. This way you can compare apples to apples. I've only seen "weird" numbers for Dynamic dynos. A supercharged 323 should not be putting down more torque than HP.
And if I remember correctly, Dynamic's calculate crank HP since they perform loading tests at the beginning of the runs.

I don't think installing the FMIC will be too difficult, I installed all kinds of forced induction in Porsches and BMW's. But, to take advantage of the FMIC, I need to take advantage of the cooler output by modifying the software, and that ain't easy. I suppose I could talk ESS into giving me (loading into the ECU) their software that they run with their intercooler and vortech unit??

Well, got my car dynojetted at N-One Racing, and came out with a 218.01whp. Humidity for this run was 36%, temperature was 95F.
They didn't know how to get the torque and rpm readings in though so the dyno chart is pretty useless (power vs speed, instead of power vs rpm)
So my both readings seem pretty consistent.
I'm pretty sure the ratio they use to calculate the octane here is the same as the ones you see at U.S. gas stations.
My dyno run in Cali was on a much cooler day, and I remember getting just under 230whp on a dynojet with 91 octane.

Not that it matters really...just spoke to a friend in KL, I believe you guys use RON. US is apparently and could be the only country that uses R+N/2.
97 RON is about 93 R+N/2. I figure if it's 97 R+N/2, you should be getting a wee bit more power.
Anyway, just enjoy the car. Take it to Sepang already! :P

What kind of coupe do you have- 325 or 330? I am assuming 325 based on your numbers. Over here in Thailand I did a dyno under pretty much the same conditions and got the following:
Max HP: 217 @ 5483 rpm
Max Torque: 277 Nm @ 5349 rpm
Temp was 97F and Humidity was at 47%
I am running a Vortech S/C at 0.45 bar

I have a 323, same as yours.

it has something to do with the e46 cars, mine did the same thing i have an 04 M3 and the max HP i got was 241 , its because the safety precaustions sense only two wheels spinning at 6200 rpms and the ecu shuts it down.
ive heard of ways to bypass it but dont know if any of those ways work

Is the price of the ESS intercooler ($2k) too steep for you? I know I would order it tomorrow if it was closer to $1000. For $2k, I will wait until after my headers and exhaust. Also, do you know where we can get an 8psi pulley for the ESS Vortech units? the software is suppose to be fine up to 8psi.

Can the software really handle 8psi?
You can get the pulley here...I dont know which one = 8 psi though

Thanks for the link. Maybe ESS has an idea which pulley would equate to 8psi for ESS Vortech units?
As for ESS software being able to handle 8psi . . .

Oh wow interesting. When I asked Hans which pulley to get a little more boost he said that the software was written for 6.5psi. I'll try to find the email. Anyways you can probably call vortech to see which one would produce 8psi. If I find it i'll pm you :D

Here is the reply I got from Hans abount running ESS Vortech units at 8 psi.
We have only tested the VT 7PSI extensively, but 8PSI should work just fine (on your own risk). Try the 7PSI IC version first since it really does make a considerable difference.

JimBot,
I am also interested in going to an 8psi pulley. If you happen to figure out which one to use, please let me know. Right now, I think the ESS Intercooler is too pricey.... Thanks
