Yes it is possible. its plug and play, just remove the CDbased nav computer and replace with the dvd based nav computer. however, the dvd based computer is quite expensive. so if you can find it off ebay or maybe off a totalled bmw for a cheaper price then you should do it.
take care,
mustafa
ps. there is alot more info on m3forum.net on this topic.

I did EXACTLY this about three weeks ago. It is a direct swap. I have a 2002 330Ci. I pulled the CD Nav out, put the DVD Nav unit in, loaded the software and voila! It totally works awesome. I can't believe how much faster it is.
I bought both the Nav unit and a 2004.2 North America DVD for just under $1k off of ebay. Pacific and Circle quoted me $1800 & $2300 respectively for the DVD unit alone + another $300 for the DVD. That was for a brand new unit and a new DVD. Go the ebay route and save yourself a lot of money. I wish I could reccomend a a seller over there but I bought both from private parties.

I have a 01 CD based nav system and I'm planning the same upgrade. As far as I know, it's plug&play. Remove the old unit and plug in the new one.
I was also thinking of upgrading from the 4:3 console to the 16:9 one. I'm not sure, but I think this also is more or less plug&play. Could anyone confirm that there is now extra wiring needed?
