I read these two codes off the car today:

P0344 - Camshaft Position Sensor A - Bank 1 CKT Interminent

P0505 - Idle System Malfunction

I was pulling out of the drivway put the car in drive hit the gas and it stalled on me. I have an auto and it was a weird experience. I read the codes and reset the CEL. Sometimes the car feels fine, other times it feels slow. I always get a CEL since I have the technik headers and no cats but these codes are new to me. My waranty expired 5 days ago, I know perfect timing, so I did a :search: and I think its a Intake Cam Position Sensor Malfunction but their wasnt alot of info on it. If it is this where can I buy a replacment and can I DIY the install?

Thanks, Jimmy

Sounds like your cam sensor went bad. Easy fix. I think we have a few in stock if you need one or you can go to your dealer.

question, when you get the engin light were do you find the code that is showing if you don't have a scanner.

I'm buying a scanner but till then. :D
thanks

Not directed at you but just informing to those who read about resetting the codes.

I observe the general intuition to resolve a CEL is to read the codes then quickly reset it and hoping that things will go back to normal. Chances are it won't for a car. Once the DME records a fault, it will stay there until the problem is resolved. There is no way of getting away, unless of course you get a GT1 to clear everything, including the shadow memory. In addition, the disconnect-battery is a myth for E46s. Period. It does work on older BMWs just not ours.

So what's the resolution?

My way of dealing with a CEL is:

1. Find the codes.
2. Understand the codes.
3. Recall a list of changes you made to the car recently.
4. Evaluate the factors that could be causing the CEL. This is a valuable chance for you to educate yourself about the health of your car.
5. If this is still bugging you, talk to your certified tech or talk to someone with more experiences.

I pulled the same code off 2 days ago (P0344) and it came back yesterday. Same exact symptoms, stall at idle and low rpms. Weird. This code is vague is it the intake or exhaust side, cam position sensor that triggers this code?

Vince very good advice, only changes i made were I changed out my plugs to new densos. Also one other small change.....I dialed my asatronic down from 9 to 6 to see what changes i could make to my LTFT it is still +10%. both banks. I have since dialed back to 9 to see if the P0344 comes back.

Yea I pulled it off and it came back on today, the car feels like all its power is gone like I am driving a 325 :lmao: The car feels like it drones and bogs at low RPM's and the power comes back in higher RPM's. Sounds like my intake cam sensor went bad, Technik can you PM me a price for a new one? Any DIY's out their on this?

Is this a typical problem we should expect with our SC's?

I had a similar problem and took my car to the stealership and they wanted to change out my cam sensor and my idle valve. I never noticed any idle problems, so I had them change only the cam sensor and clear all faults. Check engine light is gone and the car runs as good as ever. I ended up saving over $500 because of this thread.

Thanks guys:thumbup:

Just got the same code on the cam intake position sensor bank 1. Changed the sensor, car runs great, no more power loss, but I still feel my car run faster at times and slower at times. Anyone has this experience????
