After a week, 191 views and not one post of interest. I guess I will step up and be the Dickhead!!

These prices are nothing special!!!! :thumbdwn:
In fact they are very high for a group buy especially of 30 people!!!
:hmm: :hmm: drop them drastically and I promise the 30 pieces will be met in a matter of days.

Difference? :dunno:
Dry carbon fiber is a common description for pre-preg carbon fiber. The main difference between pre-preg carbon and wet lay-up carbon is that the per-preg carbon already has the resin impregnated in the carbon fabric whereas with wet lay-up carbon the carbon fiber and the resin are separate.

All carbon (and fiberglass) parts are made with carbon (or fiberglass) cloth and resin. The benefit of prepreg carbon is that the resin is applied in a factory under controlled conditions and the ratio of fiber to resin is controlled accurately. When somebody does wet lay-up parts, they just take the carbon cloth and pour resin onto it and it's nearly impossible to get the proper ratio. There is an optimum ratio for maximum strength which is a little over 30% resin to cloth by weight. Most wet lay-ups are over 50%.

So, pre-preg (or dry carbon) parts are lighter and stronger than wet lay-up and that's why race teams and aerospace companies use pre-preg. The downsides are that it costs more, needs to be kept frozen and that you need an oven and vacuum system (and/or autoclave) to use it. We use pre-preg for all of our parts because I feel the advantages outweigh the higher cost of the parts.

If this is wet carbon, we can sell them for $150.00 since these our dry carbon fiber, best we can do to host this groupbuy is $350.00

Realize that this is all well and good but the truth is that these are just Engine Covers! The strength and lightness doesn't really matter so long as the strength is enough to sit on top of the engine and heat resistent enough to not turn colors. If wet carbon fiber accomplishes these things, then it is the ideal way to go. Cheaper, less effort needed to make it.

Now, if you were offering a carbon fiber drive shaft replacement that was dry carbon, fantastic! We want that to be as light and strong as possible. But engine covers? Who cares, so long as it doesn't break when you turn on the engine (which it shouldnt, and if it does, you have bigger problems than wet CF), and keeps its color...

Thank you for the reply, I agree with what you've said. In fact, we have looked into importing wet carbon fiber engine covers for BMW E46 M3. However, we've heard numerous problems with wet carbon fiber engine cover changing its color and shape due the high tempature of the engine. Therefore we looked into Dry carbon fabrication which yields higher quality and more consistent quality products outcome. Since Dry carbon has resin already integrated into the carbon fabric, it is stronger, lighter and it will not change its appearance. With Dry carbon, it is something that you can buy just once and never buy the same item again. Average pricing for Dry carbon engine covers on today's market is around close to $1000, but we were able to provide them at much lower cost while keeping the quality at its best.

Fiber Design has my engine cover for $295...hmmmm???

Average pricing for Dry carbon engine covers on today's market is around close to $1000, but we were able to provide them at much lower cost while keeping the quality at its best.

average $1000? ... where? :hmm:

Fiber Design has my engine cover for $295...hmmmm???

well, DCP's ones are dry carbon fiber which is the reason it cost more

But, i know the manufacture and i know how much DCP are getting it for. IMO price is still too high for a 30 people group buy.

In addition to DCP's A+ information,
change of colouring is not due to the manufacturing process, hand-lay-up or pre-preg, it is because of the resin used. Pre-preg resins are usually higher quality of those used by hand lay up ones.... but the pre-pregs have a shelf life.....

not to mention the shortage for CFs...

just to let you guys know there has been a few threads discussing the differences btween wet and dry cf. As far as engine covers are concerned you will not want to buy a wet cf engine cover, the heat will discolor the cf. Dry cf should not have this problem. IMO it is also much better quality....please correct me if i am wrong. :)

Hi,
This is the first item we posted on this forum and we really want this group buy to be successful. Therefore, any suggestion on the price?

We will have more dry carbon fiber products group buy coming later, such as strut bar, lower control arms.......TBA

Thank you for the input and we will try to match your suggested price.

US$200 and they'll be selling like hotcakes. I think.. Don't know if US$200 is possible in the first place though.

Good luck!

Absolutely agreed.

As a result, vendors need to start realizing that unless they are producing extremely original products, no one is going to shell out the extra cash (at least THAT MUCH) for something they'd be a fool to not get somewhere cheaper. FiberDesign can get away slightly with their inflated prices because some of their products are not available elsewhere... but Engine Covers? Dry or wet, it doesn't justify the cost in my eyes.

For the S54 engine cover, the dry layup makes sense, but for the M54 engine covers, it's a waste. Reason being, the S54's cover is actually the cam cover and therefore needs the rigidity whereas in the M54, it's just a ignition coil cover. You can drive a M54 without covers if you want, but not a S54.

Gotcha. Didn't really know that actually but interesting stuff. However, if I'm not mistaken, aren't these just parts covered in carbon fiber? Dry or wet.

Dinan's overpriced dry CF M54 engine and fuel rail covers aren't even $1000.

Good luck getting 30 people for this GB.
I feel it'll be very hard to get that high of a number for a product that's already readily available.

Now... if you want a real original product that I feel will sell well...
CF kidney grills... and I'm not talking about the stuff you tape over your original or just replacement surrounds.
I'm talking full CF with CF vertical slats too.

i work with carbon fiber for a living and i would like for you to explain to me why wet cf yellows and dry does not. there is no difference unless you use completely different resins between the two methods

if a wet cover using surfboard resin yellows, but a dry cover using surfboard resin does not, then why? where is the difference that causes yellowing?

Of the little i know about CF, I can say that wet CF with a heat resistant resin is not good enough to resist the high temperatures of the engine..Therefore the yellowing occurs.

Dry CF is the way to go with pieces that WILL be exposed to high temperatures.
