Following some help from these boards as of today I have Icelink and all seems good! As I have no car or wiring skills to speak of, I searched here and elsewhere re install. Carphone Warehouse & Unicar (?) were mentioned as UK wide installers for about £45 but not always positively. I wanted someone local in case something wasn't quite right. Not far from me in East Londond I found an ICE centre

£145 for Icelink with dock cable including fitting. Paid £50 deposit Saturday, arrived at theirs Monday, installed this morning. Put in the Eurotray with about a foot of loose cable so driver (or most likley passenger) can more easily use iPod UI when wanted. All neat as you like.
I have 30gb 60gb and 4gb Nano so did not want a cradle. Also in London I do not want to even show an empty cradle in the car so the Eurotray is great. Nothing fancy iPod just sits in it - thin skin on the 60gb is great, nstops any sliding about. So far so good, ID3 working too (installer didn't know it could do that even!). Sounds fantastic, so much better than the tape adapter in my old 328Ci
iTunes on the move again at last!

ID3 will be the Menu selections, Artist and Song titles from your iPod showing up on your Business CD or NAV screen.

As you can tell, I am not that active on here. I did see the replies a while ago, but had some problems with the stereo I needed to check. The Icelink was fine for couple of months, put then the whole Harman Kardon system sound started failing. Sound cutting out, speakers sounding like they had blown, whole left channel failing. Every now and then it would all be fine. This was with iPod Aux (ie Icelink) CD or radio.
The obvious thing to check was the aftermarket change I had made - the Icelink. So I dropped the car back to In Car Autos in Leytonstone - correct link follows, my other one was wrong

They were great, tested it without Icelink and even tried a different headunit but system still knackered. They suggested that it might be the HK amp in the boot area but that would involve extra work to confirm. Car is still under 3 year warranty so off to BMW dealer next...After some debate as to whether the Dension had invalidated the warranty (?!) it was booked in, and yes the HK am had failed so they fixed that. Music again, hurray. But after I had driven off I discovered the Icelink was only semi connected - it was being controlled by the head unit but no sound. So booked back in, eventually (sorry sir, the Icelink is aftermarket - but it worked until I gave you the car! just reconnect it as it was, here's the diagram even!) . Fixed! But after driving away (this on 22nd December) I realise no FM radio - they have not reattached the aerial. Back in to BMW next morning, done in about half an hour.
So finally I have a very very neat Dension Icelink set up with fantastic sound quality that will take and charge either my 3G 30 gig (usually lives in the car now) or 4G 60 gig iPod photo or 4 gig black Nano    . The ID3 tags are neat but I wish you could have this AND have the iPod UI because there is no way you can quickly or easily select tracks or even albums from 30 gig of music using the Icelink stereo controls. So we tend to use the iPod UI, as my missus can queue up tunes as I drive.
Whilst I had a few problems, these were not because of the Icelink, rather the HK system and the BMW dealer. Since this original post I think Halfords now sell the Icelink and offer a fitting service. But I would still recommend finding a local car hi-fi place like I did for personal service. There is not a lot to take a photo of really, but if anyone wants pics then i can organise it. Phew, that's all folk!
