View Full Version : Water ingestion fears

Are there any solutions or ways to prevent sucking water through the intake? Obviously stay away from large puddles and what not, but the intake filter is located so low to the ground that it has me rather nervous.
I know I can install the splash sheild (which I will), but even then it's not going to prevent sucking up water if I get stuck in a deep puddle. One member with an ASA kit said that he cut part of his tube and reloacted the filter about 6" higher. Any probems if I do that as well? I don't know if it will mess with the measuring the MAF does or something? :dunno:
Does anyone have something like the Dinan water sock installed over their filter? What about the water bypass valve from AEM? Are either of those things compatable with a Technik SC? Would there be any ill effects from using either of those items?
Thanks guys.

Technik has posted on this issue before. They probably will again. In the meantime, their basic comment was that any water that gets past the filter will hit the S/C and be converted to vapor (the S/C is basically a turbine spinning at very high speed). It should have no ill effects on the car.
Obviously, if you submerge the filter in water you will have problems, but...you should probably think twice about driving through over a half a foot of water whether you have a S/C or not.
As for installing a water sock, I doubt it will hurt anything. I don't know how the bypass valve works, so I can't comment on it.

I live in seattle and rains here all the time, matter of fact it just rained here like 27 days in a row :(
I did hit a huge area of standing water on the highway when it was raining REALLY hard which triggered p0101 and p0104 codes, but i reset the codes and they never came back after 300 miles. I also have a K&N sock over the intake, which probably helps a little.
If it can survive here, nobody else should have problems unless they hit some deep standing water.

^Any details on the sock? Are there different sizes? Who makes it? Fruit of the Loom err, I mean K&N?

True but your MAF is just after the filter...

Bah, I forgot about the MAF. Something else to freak out over. :( Oh well, once I get my E36 out of storage, my E46 can be the fair weather Bimmer. :D

Well...I guess that might be a problem. Honestly, though, I had a Benfer CAI and never had any problems. Unless you are driving through Monsoons, Hurricanes or floods, I wouldn't worry about sucking air into the intake.

Agreed... with or wthout a low flying air intake you should avoid large puddles!
