I have recently learned about a new digital radio format that radio stations are beginning to broadcast with.

Will it be necessary to get a new radio that receives the new radio format or will what we have be sufficient ?

Or will we have to add a box in the trunk like we do for Sirius ?

I called a DJ but he did not know anymore than me.

Has anybody heard about it?

Thanks

i know that station are broadcasting in hi def radio and you do you to buy a new headunit for that. But for digital radio that just includes stuff like the artists name and the song title. so no you do not need a new headunit for digital radio.

I talked to one of the techies down at our public radio station a little while ago about this. They are currently broadcasting in digital and the analogue signals. The digital signal makes it possible for them to archive (onto terabytes of hard drives) any show or concert they broadcast. One thing the station also does is send out things like a station ID, song name, artist to be displayed on your radio this is a digital signal that is encoded into binary and sent to your radio thats what the pty button i think its called does. One advantage of a digital radio is cd quality music on the radio. I would not go out and buy a new system that says it plays digital radio or anything. Whats being tested or something now that is actually digital radio is called HD radio FM is like a cd, AM is FM quality, no more scratchy sound or pops, sends all the info to your radio display, and will be able to multicast on one station meaning if theres a sports game on that station but you wanna listen to there music you can choose.

Here's an article about it on crutchfield i just found too. http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/S-6d9kNl0MYLA/learningcenter/car/hdradio.html?page=3

We've had digital radio in the UK for a while now (and digital TV too) - I've just had one of these fitted in my car and I'm well pleased!

Digital TV tuners for in the car are getting cheaper too

Stealers have been trying to sell me a new rear windscreen to sort the AM reception problems - no need for it now!
