View Full Version : Whistling noise revisited, with VIDEO!
As I'm experiencing the infamous "high pitched" whistling sound from the engine bay, I did some searching on the forums and came up with a flury of different diagnostics, of course the dealer is no help either as they claimed to have failed to reproduce the problem
To get a proper (or as proper as possible over the forums) diagnostics, I've taken a video with sound of the problem.
Please take a look and let me know if you're experiencing the same problem, and if so what the solution might be.
Thanks!

Upload the file to Putfile or something so we can actually listen to it. It's already been discussed...the sound comes from the air deflecting off the throttle body when it is slightly open.
The only reason you hear it more with an aftermarket intake is because there is less sound insulation.
sorry here's the putfile link :

Yep thats the damn whistle! ... i hate that crap!
but dont worry, it's gonna get worse, mine whistles in about 4 or 5 different pitches now from the 2-3k rpm, it goes away after about 10 minutes of driving though, im taking it to the dealer this weekend to replace the crankcase ventilation hose that is in the intake manifold of the motor...ill let u know if it fixes it, it driving me nuts too, i really cant stand it anymore.... anyone else fixed this yet>????????????????????????

I thought this thread was about whistle tips..
woo woo
Any problems with your pulleys? I had a similar noise when my alternator pulley was installed incorreclty by some jacka$$. check to see if any of them are croooked and rubbing on something. I don't know for sure if that will be your problem, but just relaying my own past experience.....good luck!

Anyways please keep me updated on your visit to the dealer.

I take back what I had originally posted. My whistle isn't even 1/2 as loud and I have an aftermarket intake. I would definitely go to the dealership and get it checked out.

check the intake boot just before the throttle body and there is a hose that goes back to the crankcase valve. the flexible accordian style connection is notorius for dry rot and will cause an bad sucking/whistling noise at a partial throttle setting under load especially. everyone should check theirs as it is letting in unfiltered air. not a very difficult install, part is only 12 dollars.

Guys,
I have the same whistling problem in my 318i. I already spent about $600 replacing parts and it still whistles. What I found occasionally, was if I drop water on one of those rubber straps in the alternator it stops immediately whistling. Can you believe this? The mechanics keep changing parts, don't know what to do. It's driving me crazy:dunno:

I have the same noise but under load and when I am in gear. If I go in neutral, the GruppeM downs the whistle.
I'll change the part in hopes that it will solve the issue.
I've FINALLY got it fixed at the dealership. At first I thought it was the oil seperater, but it turned out to be a faulty alternater.
Cost me $1200 for a new alternater with the labour, but at least its fixed....
