Who has a boosted non-M? Furthermore, who has boosted their daily driver?? What kit?? I am at the 'to boost or not to boost' point right now and really my only main concern is reliability as i drive my ZHP every day.

Sure is. Within days of having the kit installed at Technik I drove it from southern California to Mississippi. The kit worked without a single problem. :)

sooo many people SC their DD but few that i know of SC their ZHP, perhaps i havent searched enough, but im not quite sure that the technik ECU upgrade is finished for zhps. (will check techniks site in a sec) thats not to say it wont work though.
also the dude who did my330i.com SCed his car, sold it with 90k miles on it, and he says the new owner rips it all the time, and its still going strong. (ESS SC)
edit: the technik ECU upgrade software on their site is currently listed as "under developement" on their webpage, however, i caught wind of an upcoming group buy for technik supercharger kits (correct me if im wrong here)
and in the past technik has taken these GBs as opportunities to debut newly finished products. im not saying they will unveil anything, but its worth checking out, who knows maybe the zhp software is almost done!

85% done with my DIY install of the ESS TX-2. Wooohooo!!! Hopefully, I can button it all up this weekend. It will be my daily driver, too.
Experience so far with DIY install: Excellent! Great Fun, but you MUST use the instructions on My330i.com, the ESS supplied instructions would have left me stranded. Also, got very good and quick help on the phone and via e-mail form ESS during the install, even on weekends. If you consider a DIY, I can vouch for the ESS TX-2, especially since you don't need to drill the oil pan (I probably would not have dared to tackle that) and because the DIY on My330i.com is very good and is available for inspection before you make the purchase decision. - No experience, obviously, with performance, driveability or reliability yet...

i have read through that walkthrough many times and it is AWESOME.
ive wondered how much similarity to other kits it would hold, when i hook up with a technik sk1 im plannin on trying to combine techniks instructions with that diy and try and figure out how to do it myself

Mizar- congrats thats awesome. how much experience do you have in working on cars?
Redronin- thanks for all the info. I realize that Technik is a sponsor on this board and all, but besides technik i know of ESS, VF engineering, and Active Autowerke, what are my options? As of now, ESS is the only one that offers a SC for the ZHP. technik, active, and vf are all in development.

You know, I believe the gentleman from my330i is from AZ, I don't remember specifically but you should look him up. See if he'll take you for a ride in his car so you can see what it's all about.
And yes, at this exact moment the only kit that I know of that is out there for the ZHP is the ESS unit.

Although I haven't had the kit for long (since Jan.) I've been trouble free running @ 8 PSI FWIW. I don't think 8 PSI will be detrimental to the car at all.
Heck if you bought his kit, maybe you could feed him some beer and you guys could do the install together.

Believe me, Todd knows his stuff. His kit has also been working for him flawlessly. Our 330 engines can take 8psi no problem. Do not hestitate to buy Todd's kit. You know that if you have him install it, you will avoid installation errors. :)

Hmm... yes the clutch. I think there may have been a few people that stayed with the stock clutch after having a SC installed, but I don't know how long theirs lasted after adding so much power.
I swapped my clutch out for a UUC unit when I had the SC put in...

04-28-2006, 09:59 PM
^I'm not really sure. I dropped my car off at Technik to get both the SC and the clutch installed. They had the car for a few days to do everything, I couldn't really give you a number of hours. Sorry. :(

would youall SC your car if it was steptronic? I wonder if I should trade it before I SC it...IT is a 323 by the way, but I am the only owner- so kinda a sentimental value I suppose...
Would a SC make my car Fast as Hell?
Could I stay with/beat a factory Mustang GT?

^There's several guys that have SC'd their step cars. :) I hear you on the sentimental value, really screws with your thought process. The brain says to trade in and start with a 330 or an M3 if you can swing it, the heart says do what you can to ring more enjoyment out of the car you have now.
As far as fast as hell, that's pretty subjective. I don't know off the top of my head what kind of numbers a SC'd 323 puts down. Probably something like 290-300 at the crank maybe a lil' less. I couldn't really tell you if car X could beat car Y. :dunno:

how many hours did it take for the clutch swap?
If you have a tech that knows what they are doing, then about three hours. I will do a write-up on the UUC Cerametallic Clutch soon. I haven't had a chance to drive the car much because it has been raining like crazy in the Bay Area. It is just starting to clear up, so I have been able to rack up some miles on it.

Beating a certain car and the feel is all subjective to the person. However, from what I remember, a steptronic 323 put down about 250rwhp, which is very respectable.

Mizar- congrats thats awesome. how much experience do you have in working on cars?
99% done! Experience with cars? None whatsoever when I bought my little wagon 3 years ago. I soon bought the Bentley and have since worked my way through whatever came up: oil changes, Inspection II, brake fluid change, camshaft sensor, control arm replacement, a trailer hitch installation and now this. If you are comfortable with this kind of work and generally like to work on your car, then go for the DIY. You will certainly become intimately familiar with the engine bay of you car in the process...
Btw, the compressor is in, DME too. Car is still on jack stands, but I just turned the key an hour ago: Started right up on the second crank (did my fuel filter in the process, so all lines were empty). No engine lights. Sounds just like stock in idle, and a little bit like a jet engine once the charger engages. But that's really all I can tell from running it a bit in neutral on the jack stands. Tomorrow, attach the bumper and put the splash guard back under (requires some trimming - don't attempt this DIY without your trusted Dremel tool) and I'll be off for a test drive.
I had it dynoed just before I started the mod, and I am having the next appointment just in a week from today. I wonder if that's too soon after (short brake in and the car computer might have not adapted yet?). Anybody a comment how long one should drive before doing a dyno after this SC install??

Who has a boosted non-M? Furthermore, who has boosted their daily driver?? What kit?? I am at the 'to boost or not to boost' point right now and really my only main concern is reliability as i drive my ZHP...
I have only about 1,000 mi. on my Technik Stage 1 kit. It's been very reliable with no check engine lights, and I drive it daily.
I think most SC kits are likely pretty reliable. MarvelPhx who posts here and also runs http://www.my330i.com has used two different ESS kits on two 330is. They both ran perfectly with lots of hard driving.
Mr Paddle.Shift on this forum tracks his Technik Stage 1 e46 more than anybody, and it's been very reliable. Check out his posts.
Thus far the new VF kits seem reliable, although they haven't been out long.
Technik and ESS both use the ASA compressor for their e46 non-M kits. It's unique in having a clutch that disengages at low speed so it's quiet at idle.
The Technik kit uses accordion hose to connect the compressor; ESS and VF use mandrel-bent piping.
ESS doesn't requiring drilling and tapping the oil pan, which is a big advantage during installation.
Lots of people use Active Autowerke and are happy with those.
