View Full Version : SC'd Misfires?

Hey all. I have the ESS TX2 running at 8psi on a step 330 for about 1600 miles now. The car was originally shifting at up to 6800 RPM with the ESS Software. At about 1500 miles, it reverted back to 6500 RPM on its own (engine adaptation...transmission adaptation??) I recently did the ECU "reset" trick (Key position 2 for 10 secs and position 1 for 10 secs then start), so that I can restart my adaptation. The car again shifts at up to 6800 RPM now.
Today I was driving under boost and right after the shift at 6800 RPM, I noticed a "clunk" sound from the rear (had this before and ESS assured me this was normal) and a sputtering sound and loss of power. Basically "limp mode" with an SES light on. Took it to the shop to have the code read. It was a misfire on cylinder 6. I shut off the car and restarted it and it was back to normal. The SES light also went away.
My question is what generally would cause a misfire in my case? Is the rev too high? Is the AFR perhaps off? Is it a coil or sparkplug replacement needed? Any of you techies know what this could be and what I might start with first?
Thanks.

switch the coils between the problematic cylinder and another one. when it comes up again, run the scan and youll know if its a coil. theyre most common, ive had it happen a few times

Thanks Boosted. Thats a good idea for troubleshooting. I have not had the issue since and have been driving hard to test it.

Does anyone know if there are better than OEM aftermarket coils? Does any of the sponsers sell them?

I think the stock ignition system is fine for the amount of boost that you are running. Have you dynoed your car? Possibly it is running lean and/or detonating at higher RPM's causing the car to throw a CEL and enter limp mode? GL

Mike I have been procrastinating on the dyno for weeks now. I know you are probably right in that a dyno could be the best place to start in investigating the issue. Thanks.

NP. Good luck on finding the culprit.
