View Full Version : SC'd ZHP's and diff swap....
I was starting to look into a 3.38 diff for my ZHP.
But, I think I've decided to Supercharge her, once the ESS TS SC is available.
Just stage 1 probably.
Those who have SC'd thier ZHP, did you stick with the 3.07 in the rear ?
Or did you do a diff as well ?
If you did, you happy you did ? or wish you kept the 3.07 ?
thanks,
Kurt

I switched out to the M3's 3.62 unit, night and day difference. Definitely recommend going up from 3.07, especially since we have a 6sp.
Thanks Samir.
I'm going to keep the eye out for a 3.38 still......

I have a 3.38 in mine, you can see the acceleration with the Supercharger in my video clip that I put up.

I also went to the 3.38 LSD after supercharging and it is simply fantastic with the 6 speed, but I have been in contact with KMS about going to taller gears based on what the ESS TS does for traction. I can light my rears up pretty easy with the TX-2 centrifugal now.
With the 3.38 and the TS, low gear traction could be a problem and if need be I have a plan in place to go back to 3.07s or even 2.93s and keep the LSD unit.
Regardless of the gears you choose, find an LSD.

You will have traction, no worries. Maybe not 1st gear, but part of 2nd gear is good right? :P
So, if I was planning on going Stage I ESS TS, you think I should just keep the 307 and add an LSD ?

the only reason is because vmwerks told me that he has no traction in first and just about all of second. he gets traction in third. what tires do you think i can go with to help? i currently have the bridgestone potenza re050A
Potenza's are heavy and lack a good, linear grip.
I, personally love the PS2's.
They're quiet. They grip very well and very linear.( as you lose grip, you lose it gradually and you can feel it, unlike some that grip, grip and then NADA).
If you drive hard, you get more than 12K out of them, but I've had 3 sets of em now and I'm getting them on my new wheels, as well.
Goodyear F1's are great too, but as the tread wears, they get a bit louder.....

However, the TS puts out more torque at lower RPM. The torque difference between 3.07 and 3.46 is a lot, which is why when people put it on, they feel such a great difference in power.

Hmmm. He drove my car before so he would know what the difference between the two would be. I don't have much of a traction problem (either tires are really good or the car just isn't putting out enough power to break the tires loose ). You can ask Walter the difference between my car and his car because he has driven both.
I am currently running Michelin PS2s and love them. I have about 12k on my tires right now and they are still pretty healthy. IMO, Michelin tires are the best street tires you can get. Well worth the money. A cheaper alternative would be the Toyo T1Rs.
2003330i,
I meant to type, if you drive hard, you won't get MORE than about 12k out of them !!!!!!!
I've always had non staggered in the past ( Audi's), so I could rotate them easily.
I'll have to see what happens with this set, as I'll get em staggered.
One other thing that people should be VERY aware of, is how tire pressure plays a roll in grip and in wear.
With the PS2's, I always ran about 2psi more than the minimum requirement by the car maker.
it's usually about 10% of your curb weight.
In the Audi S4, i ran 38F and 40R and it gripped well and the tires wore very evenly with no wear on the shoulders at all.
I am very anal as well, in terms of, i check my psi every few days.
I figure, if you spend that kind of $$$ on a set of tires, use them properly and get the most out of them.
Tire pressure also plays a key role in Under/Oversteer for a car.
kj
Toyo's issues, in the cars I've driven with them, is that the grip just goes.
You have it and then yo DON'T !!!!
They squel and you're loose.......
I agree about, as you can see about the Mich comment.
I guess, not so much for F1 anymore..... ;- )

That is true. If you drive very hard on them, they will wear faster as with any tires - but moreso the PS2 or any soft tire. Their wear factor was 220, IIRC. My tires are not wearing as evenly as I would like though because I think my camber is a bit off of optimal. However, with my rims and offset, I can't rotote tires or switch sides. :(

Well the Stage 2 seems to have 20 lbs. more torque and horsepower so it shouldn't be that bad as term of traction. I just have the Technik supercharger and their headers, but the Supersprint exhaust system. I also have the UUC Lightweight Flywheel and Cerametallic Clutch.
If you choose the Michelin PS2s, you won't be disappointed in their performance. However, their durability isn't as high. But it is a give and take relationship. :)
you want grip......... you get soft tires......
if you're concerned about tread life........ you can't be concerned about Performance.....
Sure you can find a middle ground, like with anything.....
Like folks that want 500hp and 35mpgs....... ain't gonna happen.....

i got the stage 3 with headers. still haven't got the cams. uuc exhaust, that i don't know what the hell I'm gonna do with it once the headers go in. how do you like the cerametallic clutch? after hard acceleration no mushy feel? i went with the ceramic multi puck. I love my clutch. JMWeb and TazaM3 uses it. It holds up perfectly fine. There is no mushy feeling after a hard drive. The best part is that it still feel like my Performance Organic. :D Great design by UUC!!! I need to find time to properly give my review on it. It is such a great clutch I don't want to half-a$$ a review. With a Stage 3 at most you would be pushing would be 350rwhp, like Mike. You would have to ask him on his traction issues, but he has a TM17 blower, so it puts out a bit more torque. As for my SuperSprint Exhaust, let's just say it is priced at 75% of the Technik Supercharger Stage 1 Kit. :(
As for UUC phone calls, what time do you call them? Try to call them in the morning. They have always picked up the phone when I called. :dunno:

yeah i have to cal them tomorrow to try to get rid of this clutch. i know mike has the tm17 but i'm only going with the tm15. your car must sound so nice. what else sounds okay to the ear. i have heard a few video with the tse3 and headers and it sounds horrible.

Well, it is not like the clutch is bad. I have talked to Todd about that clutch and he has said that the Ceramic clutch needs some driving habit changes. Mike loves his Ceramic clutch feeling too. I opted for the Cerametallic because of its organic feel and engagment, but much more holding capacity.
If you ask those people that have heard my car, some would say that it is quiet for a complete exhaust system. However, I get no droning at low RPMs, but nice roar at high RPMs. :) I might do a fly-by video later so people know how it sounds. IMO, TSE3+Headers = Straight Pipe Sound.
IMO, I don't think you will get much traction issues - that is from a stop. If you are rolling you should be fine with good tires. I love my 3.46 in the rear. Allow for quicker spoil into boost. :)

My research on this topic has led me to believe that with the Stage 3 and headers (approx. 340 whp), you will get rear wheelspin in gears 1 and 2. I would not change my diff. Now if the car was not traction limited in gears 1 and 2 with the Stage 3 plus headers, I would change to a 3.46. Why don't you get a lsd instead? I think I am going to keep my 3.07 and get a lsd. There are a few options out for those. I think that would be money well spent. My .02

The good thing about the 3.46 rear diff is that it helps "lighten" up the engine load at higher gears so the spoil is faster. It may affect 1st and 2nd gear traction from a quarter mile stand point, but BMWs were never really a good quarter mile car. IMO, stick with the 3.46.

I hope you know that is Samir from Technik. The one with the red ZHP and black 330, both widebodied. Both those cars have basically all E46 M3 accessories. I was there when Zolti ripped apart the entire rear of the M3 to fit that M3 rear diff. Samir quoted that as a point of reference to say that at higher rear differential makes the car drive like a whole new animal. He didn't go into details that the M3 differential was very labor intensive - probably expecting that you would already know.
