Are your ears manufactured in strict accordance with ISO 9002 standards?
No?
Then that means your ears and your perception of sound is unique. That also means that speakers that sound good to you may sound lousy to someone else, and vice-versa.
When it comes to speakers, should you listen to anyone's opinion or a "poll"?
No way.
Listen to just one thing.
Can you guess what the one thing you should listen to when shopping for speakers might be?
ITSS
(It's The Speakers, Stupid!) ;)
Listen to the speakers you are considering. Find a good audio shop that will let you play your music, and switch back and forth between brands.
What sounds good to you is what you should buy. Nothing else. If Radio Shack sounds better to you than Blaupunkt, buy the Radio Shack and enjoy the listening experience.
Asking "which speakers sound best?" is like asking "which girl should I fall in love with?" The question can only be answered by one person... YOU.
Your life. Your decisions.

I just got the BA Pro Series 6 1/2" 2-way components for my fronts and just some BA RX67s for the rears (don't really need anything great in the back since it's just ambience...)
I'm REALLY impressed with them. The reason I decided to get them is because I got to hear them first... I was gonna go with the MB Qs like a lot of people on the board have suggested, but I couldn't get myself to buy something that I haven't actually heard...
So in my opinion, get something that you've actually heard and liked!

That's the real problem. I had Diamond Audio Hex's in my old car, and loved them, although they did crack a few times in the highs. I wish I could hear them in e46's. Where ever I go, they're not installed in cars, or they're in other types of cars. I don't want to go with the Diamond's again, but just wondering if anyone has anything negative about the dynaudio's or focals?

Picking speakers is difficult, how they sound in the showroom does not reflect how they will sound in your car. The acoustics change with position, installation technique, amplifier match, electrical noise in your whip, total power and impediance matching, .....listen all you want, pick what sounds best, but it will be different once it is installed - maybe better, maybe not.

Gotta listen to them, like Rob said. They are all about the same quality. I think the overall performance of the Focal Utopia series is the best.
Diamond Audio vs. MB Quart: MB has more powerful highs, whereas Diamond does not... this is not a bad or good thing.. just preferences.. some people don't like too much "tweet".
Dynaudio: A great speaker
Image Dynamics: Great speaker.. and w/ Carbon Fiber!!! :)
My personal pick, money not being a factor, the Focal Utopias. And the magnet looks mean as hell on those bad boys! :pimpin:

Don't listen to people just for the hell of it... Do your research!!!
I have used all of them when installing several systems on several cars in the past (I did that as a side job -> audio installs), and trust me, it all depends on setup, x-over+amp setup, wiring, etc.
They all sound great, but I personally have found most people (inlcuding myself) to like the MB Quart better...they are very clean and crisp on the highs and have a nice soundstaging on the mids.... the Q series are a very nice set.
Also, the IASCA boys love them...they usually win (this is NOT what you should base your decision on)...
If you can, go listen to them...if not, you won't go wrong with the MB quart.
either way, you will be :pimpin: :pimpin: :pimpin: :pimpin:

Bahhh, all you guys are wrong. IT'S ALL IN THE INSTALL. It's the install that makes or breaks if something sounds good or not. Don't get hooched into expensive gear and expect it to sound great if the install is a$$.
And I agree with Rob to a degree....... everyone hears different things, although there is some commonality to what sounds actually good.
That being said, I run Dyns

i must say there's no freaking end to the pursuit of that perfect sound....
there are ALWAYS better speakers out there, not to mention the millions of combinations of speakers, sound processor, head unit, even the god damn wires sometimes can set you back $500 alone!!
so, my point is, how deep do you wish to fall in this black hole??

I spent days hopping around shops finding this out. Personally, I like the Focal K2P's the best. However, I don't think they're worth the almost $1k price tag. Also, when you install them in the car and listen while driving, the effect won't be the same anyways. SOOOOOOOOO..... I went with JL ZR components which I was able to get a great deal and still super crisp clear sound.
Poor man's shopping tech.

I think my OZ Audio's are just as good as the K2Ps. BTW, the OZ Audio's retail for about half compared to the Focals.

As Rob said, it is all about personal preference. What sounds wonderful to one person may sound terrible to another. Some of our customers have hearing damage, and they love tons of treble response. Others never got into concerts, and they want the smoothest drivers possible. It's all about what works for you and your ears.
However, I will argue that you will NEVER know how a particular driver will sound in a given vehicle until you listen to it installed in that car. A sound board on an amp you don't have in a room that's way bigger than your car will never give you a true impression of a speaker. Find a company that will help you find a speaker that fits your needs by asking you the right questions and then matching a speaker to you and your car based on their experience. And ask for a company that guarantees you'll be happy no matter what.

I don't have experience with Diamond, but personally for me MB would be dead last on that list. IMO they are a mid-quality speaker, their tweeters aren't too great. Focal and Dynaudio as far as overall SQ are the way to go. If you can afford Focal Utopia's get those! Otherwise Dynaudio are awesome, for me it would be a tough call between Dyn and Focal.
Have you looked at Rainbow? Seas Lotus?

Sound is subjective so obviously we're all going to have different opinions.
I have MBQ PCE216's and I love them. Some say the tweets are too sharp, but just turn the settings down. GREAT, GREAT sound quality speakers IMO, and GREAT sounding mids. The 6.5's fit perfectly in the e46.
Listen to all speakers first, then choose. Don't let anyone tell you which is better...It all depends on your tastes...

I think the goal of shopping for speakers. is to listen to the characteristics of the speekers, and try and match them to what you like.. obviously a speaker on a sound board is never going to sound exactly the same once its in your car. BUT from a sound board you can get an idea of the characteristic or type of sound that the speakers put out.
for instance, if you listen to the MB's youll notice the highs are very "harsh" they are super crisp, and at times a little too crisp. If not tuned right they can be annoying.. but those are the characteristics of MB's.. i
I have the MB's installed in my car and i loved them, but thats cause i like super crisp highs.
so if you can figure out the general "type" of sound that comes from a set of speakers, you can match it to your preference.. and yes it will sound different once its in your car, but youll have a good idea of the type of sound your gonna get..
