View Full Version : Make fogs stay on with Hi-Beams

Someone must know how to do this, i bought my HID fogs like 4 months ago and never use my highbeams anymore because it switches the fogs off. Does anyone know how to make my bi-xenons stay on with the fogs?
Thanks
Matt

Why do you want to do this? Fog lights and high beams are at odds with each other. I am assuming this is for "looks" over function?

Regardless, I am guessing you would have to somehow reprogram or bypass the LCM.

no i dont think so, i think a simple wire tap can do the trick.

I want to do it because, fogs and hi-beams are not "at odds with each other" when i flip the high beams i can notice the the spot directly in front of me (where the fogs light up) is no longer lit up

This is illegal. You can't have more than two primary sources of lighting on at once.

Well, actually fogs are supposed to cast a beam low and wide to undercut fog. High beams on with fog result in reflection (from moisture in the air) returning back at you. Fogs on when brights are appropriate result in light close to the car (the low and wide discussed above) that is potentially distracting to the eye. With birhgts on, theoretically you should be focusing down the road, but with fog lights on would also have nearfield objects illuminated. This creates strain on the eye. That is why I said they are at odds with each other. It is not a universal mistake that manufacturers make by disabling fogs in combination with high beams.

As for the "how to", I think you hit on it - if you wanted to implement another switch (the splice you refered to) perhaps that would work. Otherwise the fog switch is part of the LCM, so you would have to modify it in some fashion.

Theres an argueable loophole here in the code if I remember reading it correctly.
But even if it is illegal so are aftermarket HID's and HID fogs.

But I think its 4 projecting sources of light is the max on the front of a car, so because its bixenon's he would still only have 4. I don't see how it matters though.

im not worried about the fog at night or the laws, i just wanna know how to do it. there is hardly ever fog where i live thats not a problem for me, i just want to brighten up the road as much as i can. Anyone know which wire to tap so that angel eyes will come on with fogs? if i can figure that out then i think i can figure the rest out from there.

You could just run an independant power circuit with relays, power cable fuses etc. With the LCM I dunno how to trick it. Its easy on my car, just gotta hard wire the switch in the dash to always get power. Might be that simple on the E46 too :dunno:

you might be able to do it with a euro lcm.

in my car the fogs stay on even if i have the high beams on. the halogen highs also light up when in bixenon mode, giving me 4 high beams and the fog lights all at once. gotta love euro spec :)

didnt you get a euro LCM when you did your rear fogs? sounds like getting a euro lcm is the easiest way so far.

check this out. it's for the E36 but it should give you an idea.

if your car has a similar fog relay, you might be able to use this method. be careful though, you might fry something :shhh:

I did this mod on my eclipse and plan to do so with my 330xi. Rewire the fog wiring to a new relay and use your parking lights as the power on source.

I think the FMVSS rulings on this are ambiguous. :read: The legal guys I talked to once said that the general interpretation of the front lighting regulations is to keep fogs and highbeams exclusive of one another. And remember FMVSS regs are for OEMs, they don't apply to aftermarket mods. So, unless there is a specific state or municipal regulation against it, I don't think it is illegal.

However, I do think it would be rude to have some yokel behind or in front of me with highbeams and fogs on. So be courteous, k? :hi:
