View Full Version : MS45/MS45.1 Question

So I pulled out my ECU yesterday to prepare it to be sent to AAtuning for a quick software flash. I own a 2004 330Ci that was built in 6/2003 and is NOT a ZHP. But, to my surprise, when I pulled the unit out, it said very clearly MS45.1 on it. Now, I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression that MS45.1 was for the ZHPs only or some of the later production facelift coupes. My car is by no means a late production car nor is it a ZHP. Can anyone in here offer some insight? Its not a problem at all... just curious what's going on here!

Thanks all!

I'm interested in what mine is too, I'll pull mine when I get home and let you know what mine is. I have a 2004 also.

Thanks. But you also have a sedan so its not really like we're looking at the same thing, you know? I also have a 5spd and am a coupe. But, nevertheless, let me know. I'd be curious to see what car has what.

They're are not easy to tune. Just look at the response time for a question on tuning for a ZHP car:shhh:

I do NOT have a ZHP but on the ECU unit itself it says, very clearly, "MS45.1"

I posted because, as you stated, I was under the impression that ZHPs are MS45.1. And again, I do NOT have a ZHP... they weren't even out when I got my car!

very quick, what is zhp?

FerrariTruck
08-14-2006, 02:16 PM
ms 45 only installed
e85 z4
e83 x3

MS 45.1 installed
in e46 m54 or m56
e60 525. 530

installed in e46 from my 2003 to 2006(not the e90)

A quick way to see if you have ms43 or ms 45.1 is to look if you have a mini hfm on the secondary air injection pump

very quick, what is zhp?

if you fix bmws at the dealer you should know the zhp is a dealer code for performance package:)

Yeah but that's just a dealer/salesman code that's entered when ordering the car. If you're wrenching on the cars I could see how you wouldn't be familar with salesman jargon. ;)

Thanks! that clears that up. I know that alot of people on this forum are using some wrong information then. Anyway, thanks for clearing it up.

Oh, and why would there be grubby paws all over my ECU? I've never taken mine out and don't the tech's just port in through the jack under the steering column!

I gotta clean that thing when it comes back from AA!

Yeah perhaps i should, but generally stuff like that i dont bother remembering. I already deal with few hundred other acrynoms with the rest of the cars, I dont really care for trim code. So what does that zhp get ya? suede steering wheel, 17 inch wheels, and a M on the steering wheel?LOL

Anytime bud. I dunna bout the finger prints, have you ever had an issue where had a reason to be in the e-box? It's common sometimes that we'll swap dme and ews with another exact same car for testing purposes.

Its possible. I had that 4000rpm dip problem taken care of but that was a direct software fix and a DISA valve replacement. No troubleshooting needed. Though my car did suffer for an idle-stall/stumble problem for a while. Thats probably the only time they would have yanked the ECU.

Now I just need to convince my local dealership to reprogram my headlights to get their "adaptiveness" back. I had the headlights out of the car for a while so they "forgot" how to swivel in the right direction. I already tested them and they can move their full range of motion perfectly. Just when I have it in "A" mode on the switch, they go cross-eyed! Last time they told me to get lost cuz I had DDEs. But, I know its a software issue, not a hardware issue :grr:

yeah initially before the software fix came out we had to send the dme to new jersey for programming via fed ex. It wasnt till a while later that they came out with the software fix on our testers. As far as your lights go, all they need to do is recode the lamp module but since you kind did tamper with them they are kind of reluctant to do so. Next time you go in talk about the matter directly with the shop foreman, he'll be more willing to get it done.

JC,

I have an 04' 330 CI production 02/04. I pulled my DME out for the ESS SC flash and it was also an MS45.1. I called BMW recently and they told me that the MS45 for 330CI and MS45.1 for 330 ZHP is misinformation. They told me that facelifted 330's came with both being older production with MS45 and newer with MS45.1.

Very cool information! Glad we got that cleared up!

I'm goign to do exactly that. I just need to find the time to get into the dealership! Thanks!

Nah bro wrong info again. E46 with m54's dont get ms45. Ms 45 is only for the m54 in the x3 and z4. before the the e46 had 45.1 they were running off ms 43. this info is straight from my BMW engine electronics book

I'm only saying what BMW told me. You have clearly done more in depth research and probably have the most accurate info.

My 04 330ci's production date is 6/2003 too, same as JCz04Bimmer's, but i've got MS45 software. I even called BMW to check and make sure cuz my car is in the process of getting boosted.

Maybe the cutoff date happened during that month? :dunno:

I wouldn't take anyone's word on this topic to be honest. Just open your hood, yank out the ECU and have yourself a look!
