View Full Version : *EURO-SPEC: Carbon Fiber CSL Sedan Trunk w/ Line??? Check it*

Introducing Euro-Spec***8217;s Carbon Fiber CSL Trunk for 99-05 E46 Sedans.
This bootlid features the always elusive horizontal line across the rear.
As a fanatic I always appreciated full disclosure from sponsors, and to prevent 25 comments pointing out this and that, allow me to jump the gun and anticipate critiques of the piece.
Cons
1. The horizontal line appears to be a double line and the top lines doesn***8217;t line up with the top of the tail lights
2 Original CSL trunk has no trunk handle, this one does ( I actually prefer the look of the handle)
3. To some the arch is not quite high/curvey enough at the top compared to the oem m3 csl bootlid.
Pros of this piece
1. Best fitting sedan CSL trunk on the market hands down. This piece fits like our coupe/m3 trunks, in other words like a glove.
2. Only full CSL sedan trunk currently available with the horizontal line
3. You can have a slice of near perfection NOW. If you are still waiting for a perfect piece to come along, and think it***8217;s coming soon, uhhhh..you might be waiting a loooong time.
I ONLY HAVE ONE SAMPLE PIECE. REMAINING 5 PIECES ORDERED ARE SET TO ARRIVE IN SEPTEMBER AND WILL BE PRICED AT THE INTRO PRICE OF $550 + $120 SHIPPING.
I***8217;D LIKE TO OFFER A LOCAL SO CAL. FANATIC THE CHANCE TO TAKE THIS TRUNK AND TEST FIT IT WITH A LOCAL SHOP WE USE, FOR THE PRICE OF $475 PICKED UP.
IF NO LOCAL TAKERS, I WILL SHIP THIS BAD BOY FOR THE $475 PRICE + $120 SHIPPING TO CONTINENTAL U.S. PROVIDED INSTALL IS TAKEN TO A PROFESSIONAL SHOP WITH EXPERIENCE MOUNTING/ADJUSTING/PREPPING/PAINTING AFTERMARKET TRUNKS AND OF COURSE THEREAFTER GOOD QUALITY FITMENT PICS.

for those wondering, the reason why sedan csl trunks cannot have the line across that lines up with the top of the tail lights is because the tailights on sedans are too tall. if the line were to line up with the tail lights, the line would run right through where the emblem goes. and if you move the emblem any further upwards, the angle of the emblem would look horrible. there you have it.
Be the first to sport this CSL trunk and save $$$ guys.

absolutely understood. local sale pending on this piece though.
as i posted earlier in this thread, a csl trunk with the line matching up with the top of the tail lights WILL NOT happen because of the height of sedan tail lights. if the line were to line up with the top of the lights, it would run right through the emblem. so either way oem design is impossible for sedans. given that, this is the closest piece on the market to oem. fitment is like a glove.

Finally ... a picture with it on a car
Next question though ... why a double line? I think it would look better with just a single line centered in between the top of the lights and the top of the piece that is installed above the license plate area. It may not line up with the lights and all ... but at least a single line would match the single line on the side of the car.

Do you have the weight saving specifications vs. a standard M3 trunk lid and the CF lid? I think all would be interested in hearing that. It also might pump your sales. I am thinking about picking one of these up myself.
So just to clarify there is no difference with the standard trunk on the E46 M3 as far as fitment goes. However the line in the center is due to the handle?
Maybe I am over thinking this one.

fitment is just as good as the coupe/m3 version for coupes and m3's. the line across the trunk refers to the double line that runs across the length of the trunk as you can see in the fitment pic above. don't have exact weight savings yet but it is considerable.

And now, a few words:
Yes, I know I need a drop and some new wheels... both have already been ordered...
The standard BMW logo does not seem to fit in the spot properly (like every other CSL add-on/trunk I guess). This is partially due to the curvature of the trunk, and partially because the emblem is a hair too big. Bending the emblem a little can get it close to fitting, but I'm going to investigate better options.
My bodyshop claimed they had to drill most of the holes a little bigger to get everything to fit properly, but overall the fit and finish appears to be pretty damn good (except for the emblem issue).
I have a small gap on the right side of the trunk, but I also noticed that one of the mounting bolts isn't tightened all the way, so I'm going to have my bodyshop re-adjust it when I go back later today and hopefully there should be no gaps/issues with fitment.
I noticed some defects in the paint job, so I'm going to have to take it back and get it fixed up, but overall, I'm really happy so far!
I'm really anal and I was worried that I would hate the fact that there were two lines, and also that they connected with the top of the handle... In person, the lines are subtle enough that you almost don't notice them. Neither of the issues bother me at all, and I like it better than the version with no line.
The mold for this trunk appears to have been made by just putting an add-on onto a trunk, therefore the portion above the lines on the back sticks out a little (as if you had an add-on molded on) and is not flush with the back. It is not a big bump sticking out, just a subtle curve (that generally flows well with the spoiler). Again, doesn't really bother me and I'm really picky about stuff like this (which is why I noticed it).
It's carbon fiber... which means it's light... which means your trunk will be harder to close. I've read that you can disconnect one of the springs to lighten the pressure, but I'm still investigating better options. This is an issue with any CF trunk.
All of that being said, short of spending big bucks and having a custom CSL spoiler (not one of the readily available add-ons, which all seem to have the same issue with the emblem) fabricated for your stock trunk lid, I believe that this is by far the best option for a sedan CSL trunk.
Big props to Paul for offering these to fanatics at the best prices I've seen!

I'm pretty confident that the gap issue can be resolved by refitting and re-tightening a bolt that is loose. So, assuming that goes well, all I really need for it to be a success in my book is to figure out which roundel to fit on it. But rest assured, figuring that out is a top priority for me right now.

overall i think it looks great :) but.. not sure about those double horizontal lines. i think it looks better without the lines.. becaue they dont seem to line up.

That was my biggest concern before buying this. But, honestly, I don't think it looks awkward in person.
I originally bought this as the lesser of two evils, since the one without the lines was supposed to have had all kinds of fitment issues... but now I actually like the lines on this a lot (and it's not just because I already bought it, as I'll be the first to admit when something I bought is inferior to another product). Is it the best possible solution for a sedan? Probably not. Is it the best, available solution? In my opinion thus far, yes (again, with the exception of doing custom work on an OEM trunk lid... which would be significantly more expensive).
BTW, your car is one of my favorite M3s. Alpine white is my favorite color! I'm curious, what (if anything) did you do about the trunk lid being harder to close? Or is the plastic OEM CSL trunk lid heavy enough that it's not an issue?

actually the oem csl trunk is not as light as the CF replicas. i guessing it only weighs 5-10 lbs lighter then the stock trunk. anycase, it has no problem closing with 2 trunk shocks. it opens and closes just like a standard e46 trunk.

Okay, so I went back to my bodyshop today. They agreed that the gap is most likely a result of the loose mounting bolt. I had a bunch of small imperfections in the paint that they're going to touch up, so they're gonna do that before trying to refit and tighten the bolt. Unfortunately, this won't be happening until after Thanksgiving.
Now for the better news... IMacDaddyI details, in this post (http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5094789&postcount=18), how he got the standard emblem to fit on his CSL add-on that had the exact same problem I did. When I spoke with him, he said it fits perfectly now. If that wasn't good enough for you, my bodyshop found me an emblem that looks like a much better fit. I searched the part number from the back (51147044207) on realoem.com and it appears to be the front Z4 badge. It looks like it will still need some sanding, as the space is curved, but this new roundel looks like it's perfect for this trunk.
So, with that being resolved, here's my opinion: the trunk is awesome! Everytime I see my car from behind, I know I made the right choice. However, if you plan on painting it, make sure you go to a shop that has some experience with aftermarket parts. This is an aftermarket part. While my shop was okay with the idea, they weren't as thorough with the prep-work as I would have liked (which will hopefully get resolved when I go back to fix the paint imperfections --which weren't just on the trunk-- in a couple weeks). If you've got a shop that you're comfortable with and confident in, I honestly think this trunk is the best sedan CSL trunk lid available right now. You really have to see this in person to appreciate it (it sat in my living room for a week and I kept having all kinds of second thoughts about the double lines... the first second I saw it on the car, painted, I was in love)!
I'll post again when I go back and get it all fixed up and give my final thoughts, but as of right now it's
P.S. - I just want to state for the record that I am a paying customer like everyone else. I am not getting any sort of compensation from Paul / Eurospec for any of this. If you are at all hesitant about buying one of these, reply or PM me with your concerns and I'll try to answer any of your questions and provide more pictures if necessary.

LOOK ON PAGE 4 OF THIS THREAD FOR MORE PICS
The pic on our site is the old version WITHOUT the line which we are sold out of.
The trunks in this thread have much better fitment and no complaints.

I'd be on this in a second if there trunk handle mount was deleted. I know a body shop can fill it in but I'm not sure how good it will look.

Since these pictures i put on an OEM bracket so the license plate sits in the correct spot.
