Was thinking about Getting a VF engineering supercharger, is it worth supercharging an Auto? can the tranny handle it, the site says its auto tranny compatible. are there any drawbacks?
Thanks
Matt

get it, it worth it ... stage 1 will be perfect for auto tranny

how fast will i be? it says 330 HP with auto tranny estimates on my 0-60??? 5 flat maybe? i also plan on reducing weight. Anyway i can break below 5 with the stage 1?

Not sure if you can break 5 or not. I sent you a PM on my numbers.

I've been dissapointed with what I've seen for actual track times and such for the VF kits. If the car truly had 330 HP it should be close to M3 in 1/4 times (weight advantage vs gearing advantage) and the times are not really even close. The M3's just walk on a stage one car.

I have an ASA SK1 kit with an 11.5PSI pulley on my 320i (2.2L M54) with step. I changed my original 320 step gearbox to a 330 step gearbox and it's holding up just fine.

Here are my figures when I was on lower boost (8PSI pulley) so you can gauge for yourself:

I dont have an auto so I can tell you much but I will tell you this, you have a weight advantage over the m3s, get a diff swap and you will be set ;)

btw get the TM-12 with a 9.5 psi pulley. you will beat an M3 auto or not :D

nice numbers for a 2.2L

Are you suggesting higher diff ratio? I think autos already come with higher diff ratio. :dunno:

S/C on an auto tranny, I was always under the impression anything over 6.5 psi was pretty dangerous to be running on an auto... dont want to lose the tranny- but boost = :excited:

Yeah, why a part out thread if you're going to s/c?

anything producing over 400 NM of torque (~295 lbs/ft) and equivalent ~320 hp will likely put too much stress on the auto tranny. this info is gathered from looking at the various kits offered by proven tuners, and Mr. Paddleshift. that'd be a centrifugal blower with a pulley producing ~6 maybe 6.5 psi (though ESS' TX2 for 330 autos comes with a 7 psi pulley producing 325 hp).

of course these numbers might in some cases be even too high, and too low in others. a guarantee that it won't harm the tranny in the long run can't be given. i personally wouldn't exceed the 6 psi & 300-310 hp line "just to be safe(r)".

I concur  the step tranny just can't handle it IMO and as well as many others opinions- however, since obviously a member has dyno sheet's it may be possible, but as far as longevity of the tranny, hope you've got some duckets saved up! :excited:

There's a certain model of ZF Step, 5HP19, that will hold up with 304hp. This has been proven in the Alpina B3S.

Any equipment will eventually fail at some pt. To prolong its life means to take a bloody good care of its functionality. Change fluid/filter as needed. Add a secondary cooler if needed (which I did). The Step will last longer than you think.

Perhaps a show of hands...when was the last time you checked your transmission fluid temperature?

So Vince you changed your auto tranny fluid?

yes he did if i remember correctly, somewhere around 30k miles.

My 330ci is step and i was thinking of going SC in the near future. I know how everyone is saying, not just in this thread, but everywhere else, that the auto tranny is too weak.

But what i wonder is, would some tiny modifications such as adding a stronger purpose-built-TC and adding a strong tranny cooler, help in safely handling the power produced by these awesome SC systems. especially! the new TS SCs.::drool:

By purpose built TC i mean the existing TC was designed for 200 something ftlbs of torque not 300-something. So replace with a TC that is built for 300ftlbs.

Also the MAIN cause for automatic tranny failures is Heat buildup, from slippage of the internal parts of the auto-tranny. therefore, getting a cooler, which would aid in the temperature stability of the auto tranny would help considerably.

Here we go again...

Vince has S/C'd his 325 step and has driven it to the limits. He's more than proven that it can handle the power. He takes care of it and actively monitors everything, so he's good to go. As for 330s, that's where it gets iffy. There's alot of threads about this, but let me just state that I have the ASA SK1 kit @6.5psi on my 2001 330Ci step. I recorded ~264HP to the wheels, which with a 20% drivetrain loss figure, comes out to ~330HP at the crank. I've been supercharged since last November and I drive my car HARD. I redline it frequently and I've driven it very hard at autocrosses. My "unofficial" fastest time is ~5.1 for 0-60. Unofficial because it was recorded with a G-Tech Pro. I want to do official 1/4 mile runs, but haven't got around to that just yet. I changed my tranny fluid almost immediately after putting in the S/C and I've been talking to Vince about that secondary cooler.

So far, so good

Vince or Shinobi, could you tell us a little more about that secondary cooler?
