hello guys....another problem...
can a maf sensor go bad just like that *snap*?? the reason i ask is that...i just bought a brand new maf sensor about 5k miles ago and every thing was perfect!! how the problem happend....today was a very nice day in hawaii...every thing was normal, drove to work fine, BUT when i was about to leave from work, my car did not want to start!! it would crank but would not turn over....i had this same exact problem and found out that it was the maf sensor...so i changed it about 5k miles ago and every thing was fine....could it be that my maf sensor went bad again?? i tried unpluging the maf sensor and it had the same symptoms as it was plugged...
is there a way to clean it?? could it get that dirty enough for it to act this way??
thank you for your help every body... any response will be greatly appreciated!!

Is the CEL on? The oil from the K&N filter tends to foul up my MAF sensor. I clean mine with the MAF cleaner from Pepboy.

1188 Fuel control ( Bank 1 Sensor 1 )
1189 Fuel control ( Bank 2 Sensor 1 )
1140 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem.
0170 Fuel Trim Bank 1
0173 Fuel Trim Bank 2

I personally think that it might be a bad fuel pump .
Do this for starters take out your rear seat .
Then locate the Fuel Pump cover .
Remove the top cover off your F.P .
Then remove the harness off the pump and check to see if you ave a signal to it . If you do have a signal then do a Fuel pressure test .
Let me know what happened after that . Oh by the way feal free to call me at 949 364 0954 it would be much easier to help you over the phone .
Im Jack by the way .

i have had the same problem , i took it into the german mechanics shop, they said my fault code was a bad maf, put a new on in , and it didnt fix the fault codes.. :banghead:

but im getting the same ones as you.
P0173
P0170
P1189
P1188

So im guessing all i have to do is take off my rear seat, and swap in a new fuel pump? I assume this can be done with no "special needs" tools?

how hard was this.. :hmm:

well every thing was pretty much straight foward
-remove rear seat by pulling up
-behind the passanger seat is where the fuel pump is, remove the rubber piece
-remove 4 (10mm) bolts off the metal cover
-remove metal cover, you should see the fuel pump by now
-you will see a electric connector slide the clip to the left and pull out, then remove clamp from fuel line, remove fuel line and plug it with a bolt that will fit its size...
-you will see that around the fuel pump there is a grayish looking cap with slits around it...(bmw has a special tool, but i just used a flat head screw driver and tapped it with a hammer till it started to loosen up (lefty loosey, righty tighty) )
-remove metal cap and pull the fuel pump lever up...it should pop right out.
-remove fuel pump
-replace with new fuel pump and gasket...(the hardest part)
tip: dont place the new gasket on the fuel pump, place it in the hole where the fuel pump goes in first...
-put metal cap on the fuel pump and push down with all your might and tighten..
-reverse steps after that..
thats about it! no special tools really needed..easy DIY...

FIRST: before replacing...check if the fuel pump is still good...you dont want to replace anything that doesnt need to be replaced....when back seats are out turn the key to position 2 and see if the fuel pump makes a buzzing sound...if it does then every thing is good

SECOND: i still do have the p1188, and p1189...im not sure if p0170, p0173 is still there ill have to get back to you on that one...
i replaced mine because my car didnt want to start...it sounds like yours is running fine...but idk...

let me know if every thing goes fine..

i have bad news! i still have the damn codes...
p1188
p1189
p0170
p0173

replacing the fuel pump DOES not turn these codes off.... so i wouldnt replace your fuel pump unless your car cant start, and if that is the problem....

but then again...my gas light is on...so i am gonna fill up my tank and erase the codes and see if it comes back again...hopefully

I have the SAME exact codes as you; did you ever find out what was wrong?

I have those 2 codes,
P1188
P1189

car wont turn on, it sounds like it wants to but it just wont turn over.

What could be the problem, how do I replace those 2 sensors?

Where are they located?

It's rare that both O2 sensors would go out at the same time, although you should replace both if one goes.

And AFAIK, the car should start even if the sensors were busted, but you'll get a CEL though.

Better check the fuel lines first: clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump relay, fuel pump. Find out what the problem is first before replacing parts.
