two 10" subs == 492.98 in^2 surface area
one 12" sub == 354.95 in^2 surface area
The general rule is double the subs with the same power is +3dB, so if I had to take a random stab in the dark, with the same power, the two 10s would be about 2 dB louder.

How much power do you have on the 10's?
Have you punched the ski pass? it helps with bass.

surface area is not the question - it's about displacement:
1 12" max = 1340.7 cm^3
2 ID10's = 1190 cm^3
therefore, hypothetically, the MAX has a greater potential for output. The big question is what box and then what amp?

ive got one 12" IDMAX v3. running off a PG 800watt amp.
1.2 cu ft. sealed enclosure
Not sure how much bass you are looking for but my HU is set at -24 for sub volume with amp gain around 1/4 up.
The bass is TIGHT and HITS hard. Don't have any SPL numbers for you, but all i gotta say is that it is definitely not lacking. Any louder and it would literally displace plastic paneling in the car.
Funny though how 2 10" IDMAXs are not enough for you. What box and amp you running?

i dont got 2 10" idmaxes.. i got 2 regular id 10's, currently im running a 600 watt amp, ill be upgrading to a 1000 watt amp soon. it actually hits really good, prob hard enough for lot of people, but a little more wouldnt be bad~

im using a .75 cu sealed box, maybe i should try ported? and using a 600 watt amp.

Where are you getting your excursion numbers?

check their site - www.imagedynamicsusa.com - they have all spec sheets for current products listed in pdf form
just because a sub has more cone area, doesn't mean it will be louder. The perfect example would be an IDQ12 v and IDMAX10 - the MAX will displace more air. Same goes for an IDW15...
that said, with a larger cone, you need less excursion to get the same output, so hypothetically, the larger cone can be cleaner b/c as excursion increases, so does distortion - again, hypothetically speaking!

Well yeah, it's just surface area times excursion for total air displacement, but you also have to factor in things like power, efficiency, etc.....I was just using the most basic comparison.

More displacement will provide more output at lower frequencies. But output is more of a function of motor strength (BL). I've never seen a BL figure for any ID sub so I'm guessing here...
The IDMax has a much stronger motor and its BL curve doesn't fall off as sharply on the low freqs as the ID10s.
Bottom line, an IDMax 12 will give you a LOT more output than 2 ID10s. I will guess that you will get more than a 3db gain.

oh...then 1 12" IDMAX will certainly be good enough for you
i've heard 2 10" IDQs, and SPL and SQ was nowhere near my 1 12" IDMAX
IDMAX will do well with 600-1000 watts.
Go for it!!!
