View Full Version : Installing Guages: Need Help

Well, as most of you know I've gotten my TS2 Kit in and now just want to make sure I can monitor some vitals. I have a boost guage, oil temp guage, and an oil pressure guage. Before I went diving into my engine trying to install everything on that side, I had a few questions.
The oil pressure sender only has one sender bolt. Is it possible to attach both the wire to the guage and the wire to the dummy light for low pressure on the single sender? I don't know if that will lower the actual reading for the guage or dummy light or both.
Also, as you can see in the pictures, I have purchased a Leatherz oil distribution block. For those of you with the ESS TS systems, do you think it is possible to get the block plus senders mounted directly to the original factory oil pressure location?
Also, the oil temperature sender is too long to go into the block. The threads seem to match up but it is way too long. Is it possible to cut the sender right below the threads to make it fit or will that damage the sender?
Thanks in advance.

The senders for oil temp "usually" go in place of the drain plug which is what makes them so convenient. I am pretty sure thats why the bolt is so long and why it has the crush washer etc.

Thanks to Leather Z, my VDO gauges have been monitoring the vitals after my TS system was installed:thumbsup:
Br warned though that it was a tight fit and i just about got the senders in place ........the long snout of the TS and the en bloc unit of Lysholm and manifold make it more trickier than normal :banghead:
BTW the dummy light connection in my car snapped off because it was so short and as a result i`m just relying on the VDO pressure readings to monitor oil pressure.
With the distribution block and pressure sender, there are a few suggested positions to try to get it fitting properly as on the Leather Z website.
Good Luck

Is it possible to run both the dummy light and pressure guage with the single sender?

You should consider an AFR gauge as well

This is interesting because I'm in the same boat, I'm about to purchase the same gauges, just a different brand, defi- I'm curious to know if I should get an oil block adapter or not? Is it easier with one? Do i need to have one?
Any recommendations are greatly appreciated, thanks guys-

If you are installing a TS, you definitely need to get the adaptor and it WILL be a tight fit down there if you can get everything to fit right. Dont know about other superchargers. If you are only NA, then still get the adaptor so you can run both sending units. fit will not be as tight.
To the OP who asked if you could run the dummy light and gauge with the same sender, theoretically you could, but you would have to come up with a circuit that can process the signal so that the non matching gauge can interpret the non matching sender unit's signal. Not an easy thing to do.

Yes, if you use VDO pressure senders. VDO pressure senders are dual port, one for "G" and one for "WK" (warning kontact at 7psi pressure).
Our ODB was designed to work with VDO senders only. To the OP, you should probably plug the other port in the ODB and put the temp sender you have at the oil pan drain. Use a 1/8-27NPT plug and some thread sealer on it. Even still, I am not sure the ODB will fit your car with that non-VDO pressure sender. You are using the port we use for temp for pressure. The reason the block has an angled face is to position the pressure sender at an angle to clear the oil filter housing. You may collide with it.

I've currently got an ASA setup, I've had it for about a year now lol, only put like 3k miles on it though lol-
Thank you for the info though, I appreciate it-

Well, I may get a braided stainless steel line and remote mount the ODB where there is more room. I don't know how it will work but I'm sure I will figure something out.
Those gauges look REALLY nice!
Which gauges are they, btw?
And ... any action shots?

Those are Autometer Sportcomp gauges. Not much action on them assuming you are asking about startup/shutdown sequences.

Nope, either way. They aren't plugged in with power anyways. I'll post up some pics once I get them installed.

I hooked up the oil temp right into the one unit that you got. Also with the oil presure unit as well. I went to a special hardware store and got adapters that fit everything on to the one unit.
After all that, hooked it up to the factory spot by the alternater.
It just fit but got all three to feed from the one. Everything worked well

I have a TS2 on the way too. I was contemplating an AFR guage, do you feel it's not necessary? I'm new to FI so bear with me, just trying to figure out what I absolutely need to mointor if anything.

Wow.... wasn't expecting this thread to be brought back up.
No, unfortunately, still have not had the chance the get them installed. At that time, I was comtemplating doing it myself, but I realized more and more that the installation would be difficult with the TS2 already installed.
So now I am going to take it to a shop, Harrison Motorsports, for those of you that live in GA. Only problem is that they are only open during the weekdays and I haven't had a day off yet where I am free to do it. One of these days I will get it done and post pics, but it isn't that important right now. I bought the gauges before the kit was installed thinking they would be important in monitoring the supercharger. Now that I've had it for awhile, I know now that the guages will pretty much give me information that I don't really need.
fmzip, you don't need an AFR guage. The programming from ESS is foolproof and it will monitor your AFR and adjust accordingly. Even if there was something wrong, you couldn't do anything about it without sending it back to ESS anyways. Also, if you do plan on getting a AFR guage, at least make sure it is a wideband, anything else is pretty much useless.
