I had read that the installation of the Technik supercharger systems requires the removal of the alternator fan which might lead to premature failure of the alternator.
Do all supercharger systems require removal of the alternator fan or is this specific for the Technik setup?
Thanks!

alternators fail prematurely even without the SC. I have replaced my stock 9 amp with a stock 12amp one I believe for cars with more accesories. I dont believe you remove anything. The only thing on the techniks kit is the drilling of the pan for the oil return line.
edit:oh yeah and a little bracket grinding if I remember correctly.

There has never been an alternator fan. The clutch fan on steptronic models is the one that is replaced with an electric fan. There is however an alternator duct that draws air from the driver's side brake duct to the voltage regulator, located at the rear of the alternator. I believe most SC kits require this duct to be shaved or removed.
Most folks don't bother abou the duct but when Bosch designs a duct and BMW engineers design an opening to draw air from the brake duct, it means that adequate cooling is required.
I am, however, certain that the removal of this duct can further shorten the life of the alternator. I logged some data pertaining how hot the regulator can run. See my blog for details. I also placed a new duct to draw air from in front of the bumper.
