Having installed a larger intercooler (posted a while back) on my 2.0 turbo diesel E46 Touring this has been in the back of my mind for some time.
now starting to think about it more seriously.
Here's an article in 4 parts on the subject
http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/article.html?&A=0527
I dont want to fork out for an intelligent one though ...happy to flick a switch me!
Now, it seems fortunate that I don't have headlight cleaning jets because if im not mistaken the washer bottle has a blank recess where the headlight washer pump would have gone?
Using this reservoir has a couple or three obvious advantages a. theres a warning light when it runs low b. its large c. no more space required for installation of another tank.
i think basically i need to buy a headlamp washer system minus the usual jets, some fixing brackets and alternative jets (4 maybe?) which produce a fine mist.
no. 4 here

any help appreciated guys

That would be greatly appreciated!!
Milner, 4 reasons:
more power (not measured yet)
better fuel consumption
decreased thermal load on engine
increased scope for more boost
(the car is of course a european turbodiesel)

its just cools the core temp down on the IC like lets say after a hard run on the strip..
you idle ...spray the hell outta you intercooler and go for another run.
stuck in traffic?? lets spray the shiti outta the IC with not water but some cO2 and freeze the mutha!! but wait its too close to you intake so co2 not so good!!!
what !
but it looks so awesome!
I rather have a alcohol injection.. it seems to make more sense then an IC sprayer.

Does this make sense for non-F/I'ed cars with stock intercoolers?

I did it because i drive long distances and i do feel heat soak, especially in 110 degre weather in Palmdale where i live... The water sprayer practically cost me nothing to make...It looks really cool and very intimidating.. :4ngie: Plus i didnt feel like spending $800 for W/A injection..

Interesting.... I know Mike said you were both going to be trying this out. Why didn't you get the water / alcohol set up and go stage 2 ? Let us know if there is any difference in performance . I don't think Mike needs this because of the water / alcohol set up . I wouldn't think it would hurt either....
By the way, It was nice meeting you at the meet in Calabasas last Sunday.

in fact cheaper i think if i can track something down from a garden centre...for misting seedlings
wonder if pressure of water will present a problem with something like this....
seedling mister (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.grovelands.com/acatalog/irrigation_gardena_micro_watering-gardena_mist_nozzle_1371-tn.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.grovelands.com/acatalog/Gardena_irrigation_micro_drip_watering.html&h=200&w=150&sz=5&hl=it&start=71&sig2=Qrf-O7PnmWFEjyilgJ5cyA&um=1&tbnid=EwupCSsUna8PuM:&tbnh=104&tbnw=78&ei=t1G4RqjUIIOewwHCo8CbBA&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dseedling%2Bmist%2Buk%26start%3D57%26ndsp%3D18%2 6svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dit%26rls%3DGGIC,GGIC:1970--2,GGIC:en%26sa%3DN)

anyone try re-routing the window wiper fluid nozzle down to the intercooler??
is it possible..?
I was thinking it be the most simplilist easyt functional way without having to pay an arm and a leg for a
NX -cooler mist sprayer.
awesome video btw JT

That kinda what i did... I disconnected my the head lamp washer hose and connected a new hose and routed it through my bumber and connected to Two whinds sheild washer sprayers that i bought from Auto Zone for $10
Wahllaa thats it..
BTW.. i dont think those little misters will provide enough water to the intercooler... My sprayers litterly flood the intercooler... :)

Im gonna give it a try later in the week, but I think Im gonna have to find a thin hose to route the water from all the way on top of the hood to the front intercooler.
how nice you have the headlight washer!
so close to the front bumper!!!

the misters provide a more complete coverage imo and use less water. the surface only needs to be wet not dripping i think (?) these make a nice wet circle about 40cm in diameter when sprayed from a distance of approximatelt 15 cm ...im gonna get another one (so one either side) then a headlight washer motor some tubing and a reduction pipe and i think im sorted
this cost 4 euros (6 dollars) garden seedling mister

ill use just the nozzle ... really a beautiful fine mist enough to wet the entire intercooler with a two second press. if you spray it on your face youre wet but not dripping. very refreshing!

i dont have the headlight washer ...just a blank place where it would go ...i plan to drill it out and (or is it a plastic cap on ther?) and push a washer motor in there with a seal

As soon as the 85mhp wind hits the water.... The water will go through the etire surface of the intercooler

Johney, your wasting water. If you got a finer spray pattern, you can save some waterrrrrr
Tazlord
08-07-2007, 05:34 PM
I think a finer mist would be better due to more coverage. Yes, blowing wind will help spread the water around but probably not as much as is needed to cover most of the IC.
Also, it would be interesting to see what happens if you use alcohol or a water/alky mix. As everyone knows, alcohol evaporates faster than water so it produces a faster cooling effect than just water alone. This might be useful for situations where you're sitting idle and the ambient temperature is hot enough to heat up your water reservoir (ambient heat + engine compartment heat).
Thoughts?

08-07-2007, 05:45 PM
immediate thought ...effective yes but expensive
a fine mist of water supplied from the very large washer tank is free and will last a long time
id only envisage using it when crawling along in heavy traffic on a hot day really to stop the ic becoming a heat sink

Wasting water huh mike.... lolol..... I didnt know water cost $4.95 a gallon... :)
320de46m47
08-08-2007, 05:01 AM
Not the cost, it's that you dont have to fill it up so often and you dont get pedestrians saying "Oy mate, your car's leaking!"
and hey, at night looks like a dry ice stage effect in the headlights (maybe?) :)

I thought you would understand since you are middle eastern bro. Water is sacred in our home townss... hahhaa
But I would change to some finer misters, I just think it's a better idea
