View Full Version : two questions for ESS relating to the TS

I went to the auto-x today for the first time since installing the TS.
Two things...after a hard right corner (each of the five runs) the car would miss and choke. Now, I am 99% certain the fuel pump is on the right side of the tank and if so maybe with the car having about a quarter of a tank (or less) it was momentarily starving for fuel.
AND - the power steering at the end of the run would be whining and the steering effort was hard...looking in the reservoir I noticed the level was correct but the fluid was completely full of bubbles and frothy. After about 5 min (about the amount of time before my next run) it would settle down and work fine....the only reason I ask is...I never experienced this before the TS install.
Also, is there any update on software for my TS2+? I have finally started to experience the rough start issues when the car sits for any long period of time and a slight hiccup of power when on the highway and I step into the throttle after cruising for a period of time.
THANKS IN ADVANCE - AND I LOVE THE TS SYSTEM

The hard right-handers choke is very common to the E46 with low fuel. They even make baffled fuel tanks for race cars to solve the problem.
I don't know how the TS would affect power steering at all. Only the tank is replaced with actually a better one. Do you have any kinks in the hoses?

not after my first issue with the ps hose (my fault not ESS's)

Todd is correct, the E46 cars suffer from fuel starvation during hard cornering with low fuel level in the tank. Before track racing it is always a good idea to have a decent amount of fuel in the tank or install a race tank setup.
I would check the power steering hoses and make sure none of them are kinked, the TS does not interfere or change the power steering operation at all. If the hoses look fine I would replace the PS fluid.
We will soon release a new version of MS45 TS2+ software with a few tweaks for slightly better torque and a few improvements on overall smoothness. This software will be available free of charge.

Mine too does the same when cornering on a 1/4 tank petrol.
The car drives much better in the heat then in the cold.

Really? I notice heat sink much quicker in the heat (95+) than when it was NA

^ He's probably talking about driveability vs outright power.

Aye.....
Starts are less lumpy and drives smoother on a warm/hot day.
BTW, i was checking the oil level in the TS the other day and found that i could only insert a thin wooden stick down by 19cm. oil level was at 2.5cm from the submerged tip of the stick. Have you guys found the same measurement?
Thanks

According to ESS the oil level should be at the center of the shaft in the TS.
I used a chopstick. Put it in until it hit bottom. The wet part was about 1.5 to 2 inches. So 2.5 cm seems low to me. I would expect about 3.5cm.

WOW- there was only about 2cm of oil in the 16oz bottle they sent so I do not know how you could get 1.5 to 2 inches...
Maybe mine is running too little....
AJ - please chime in here.

Don't confuse the amount of oil that came in the bottle with the way it is measured. The indication on the stick is more a function of the way the oil sits in the TS rather than net amount.
So. I was merely indicating what the stick looked like after I had inserted it and extracted it.
Dipsticks in an engine are the same except that they are calibrated to give a rough indication of "actual" engine oil level.
In the case of the TS the net amount is not what we are after but rather that there is the "enough" amount in there.
BTW. As I recall the little bottle I recieved was fairly full, then again it's been six months since I did the install.

As you will see, there is only a few cm or about an inch of oil in the bottle (about the size of a 16oz soda bottle).
I will check my fluid level tonight, I think I am going to go home and tear mine apart and install the TS2+ pulley and replace the PS hose.

The normal level is 1 cm under the center of the driveshaft. If you put in to much the excess will simple be released out the snout center.

The oil level in your bottle is normal. All oil bottles are exactly premeasured before the kits ship out.

Mine came in a different bottle. Any way, when I compared the weted level on the stick to the pulley on the outside it came out exactly as Asbjorn said.

Some pics to illustrate oil level.....
TS was warm (3hrs after a 45min drive)
Thin straight hanger wire used wrapped in masking tape - only 19cm till bottom

Oil level up to 1.9 inches
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c59/maxnathan/DSCF1096.jpg
Black mark is max length until the base of TS is reached (19cm)
Any thoughts AJ?

That is pretty much exactly what I noticed. I would say the level is spot on.
