if someone has a "Driving School" type Helmet in relatively good condition and wants to part with it. I'm hoping to get one for $40-$50 used or I'll just get one new. Throwing this out there. Snell 2000 or later.

thanks

3/4 I prefer, so it's easier to talk to the instructor, but since I'm going faily cheap on this beggers can't be choosers, right? So, as long as it's not disgustingly dirty either one.

or does anyone recomend a site to get these new for cheap? I only go to schools like once a year, but I want to get more into autoX.

no, they are made differently, and in many cases are not acceptable track/autox legal.

If you plan to mainly autox, I would try to find a helmet that is NOT full faced. You have much better visibility, and its more comfortable (especially on hot days).
You can find new ones for <100 easily, but don't expect anything special!

Good luck!

Thanks, what's been getting me is trying to google "SNELL 2000" and surprisingly little comes up. I've tried adding BELL to it, even less results. Finally thought to search "Driving Helmet" and that worked. Thanks for the help, yeah I'm getting a non full faced one.

I HIGHLY suggest trying on a helmet before you buy it. Not only is a properly fitting helmet important for safety, but comfort too. Also buying a used helmet can be questionable because you don't truly know the history of it(if it's been in an accident or dropped).

Motorcycle helmets (M2005) are subjected to different tests by SNELL than auto (SA2005) helmets. The impact tests are somewhat similar, but SA2005 helmets are subjected to a series of fire resistance tests. SA2005 helmets have nomex liners, M2005 helmets generally have nylon liners. Nylon is cheaper and cools better, but is not fire resistant, in fact it tends to melt and be very nasty in fires. But motorcycle riders don't worry much about fire because they're not seatbelted to the incendiary device.

Most autox will allow M2000 helmets. Almost every track event will require SA2005. Any new helmet purchased from a reputable dealer will be SNELL 2005, either M or SA.

OP, Greg is correct, you really need to try helmets on. I have some personal bias, but you can try this: http://www.upr.com/product.php?productid=263 Ask for Tim or Jeff. They can help you pick a good helmet. But ultimately, you've got to try them on to see what fits your noggin.

One other thing to consider: I know you said you'll only be using it rarely, but unless you think you've got a $100 head, don't buy a $100 helmet.

Just my $0.02.
