So lately (has it been just this year?) bolt-on turbo kits are finally coming available for the e46, now that BMW has discontinued production. By contrast, supercharger kits have been available for, what, four or five years? (Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's the ballpark).

So why the delay in the availability of turbo kits? Is there some engineering challenge or other technical reason?

I think it's just demand. Many people don't realize that an SC on the non-m can/will perform as good as a turbo kit. Most level II SC kits are pushing 300+ rwhp on 330s, which is pretty damn good. I can't see a similar turbo for the same price pushing much more at all.

Turbo setups are usually more expensive, more complex, and take more time to tune correctly. SC'n is less expensive and easier by comparison. And since this market is all about "the most HP for my $", thats why.

Agreed with everything above ^^. Also, weren't the turbos for the E46 made in about the same time as for the E36, meaning about 4-5 years after the car was released? Its all about time and demand, and of course, costs
