As I think most of you know we have taken my motor out as we had a fuel injector fail on cylinder one. That cylinder was running lean, caused the piston to heat up to the point of melting the corner and actually blew out the ring lands.
http://home.comcast.net/~chadreoli/pics/001.jpg
This was the original conclusion once the car through a check engine light and stumbled. The injector was tested and it in-fact was not working 100%.
Now winter is here and I decided to stop messing around and go for bigger boost.
D/A is sending me their 9.5:1 ceramic coated pistons, speced rods, etc. and I will post pics as she comes together.
The block is off to the machine shop to be checked out and make sure that all is well.

Cool; make lemonade from lemons. Are you going to replace all the injectors as a safety precaution?
Will you have a fully forged bottom end to include the crankshaft?

We are using the OEM Crank but the journals will be polished.
As for the fuel system, it looks to be getting an overhaul. So there will be new lines, fuel rail, in-line pump, Injectors, etc. We are planning to run 20 psi, so this will require allot more fuel.

I do not know the exact number as she was not put on the dyno. The incident occurred immediately following the her photoshoot for BMW Car Magazine, approx 12 hours before my transport came to get her.
The plan was to bring her back home and place her on the same dyno I used previos to sending her out to get a true number.

It is the worst thing that could have happened.

Yeah .. I have my :vinmac: hanging out across the street from Bosch ready to take out the injector team ...
As for the fuel, she will be running 93 octane pump. I will also be installing the new Aquamist HFS-5 system and adding in individual water injection per TB for added safety during my more spirited parking lot burnout sessions :craig:

That sucks. At least you made it through the photoshoot.
Weak injectors are often overlooked and mis-diagnosed. Real weak (like 50% of capacity) or a pluged injector is ok because the car will run like crap and you'll know it right away. Slightly weak is disastrous because the engine will still seem fine because the lean cylinder will not reveal itself unless you have individual EGT probes. We've seen 750cc injectors flow as much as 770cc. and as low as 720cc. We have all of our injectors flow matched and we pair similar ones together, but I'm actually thinking of building an injector testing station just to be safe.
Which pistons and rods are you running from D/A? Good luck with your project.
Take care,
Chris.

I believe they are D/A Spec'ed Forged CP Pistons 9.5:1 with Arrow Forged Connecting Rods. The pistons will be ceramic coated, skirts friction coated as well as the bearings.
As for the new injectors, we are looking into the RC Engineering setup. They come in matched and fully tested.

Will you be using the same head and valve train? Perhaps individual exhaust gas temperature probes, as HPH Chris mentioned, would be a very safe insurance if any other contributing factors to the lean condition existed; but certainly an inadequate injector would be more common. Now would be the time, while the block is at the machine shop, to establish probe access locations.
Are you replacing the injector harness as a precaution?
Again, sorry for your damage but really enjoying your recovery, rebuild, and improvement.

The head is a Stage III w/ D/A F/I Cams with now 200 miles on it .. lol
It will be getting stripped down, sent to be thermal cleaned with the block and then reassembled.
We are leaving the injector harness as it was found that the injector itself was the failure.
As for the EGT probes, I do not think we are going to be installing a per cylinder probe w/ monitoring.

well, i think that it takes to much engine power for an engine to move the T trim...i think the S trim is a more eficient head unit on this motor...
but ofcourse, i will not know for sure if my theory is right untill i can
see 14-15psi on my S trim once my VANOS is being corrected.

Nope .. I went T-Trim from the start. The plan was to start with about 8-10psi on the built head and stock bottom end, then build the bottom end up and raise the boost.
Since I was planning on raising the boost to the 18-20psi marker in the future I went with the larger blower so that a blower change would not be needed.
The injector has of course now sped up this whole process.

I am pretty sure we are going to use the multi-steel OEM sized VAC head gasket. As for the piston bore, we are looking to sleeve it to actually go a tad tighter than OEM.
The motor had 30,000 miles on it and was out of spec .01-.02mm

Did you get sleeves b/c of cylinder damage due to the injector or did you just decide to do sleeves to add more thickness?
Little of both if that makes sense.
We technically could have overbored it and called it a day, but it would have been right at the limit of what was allowed.
We then looked into replacing the block as my builder wants to maintain a tighter tolerance, but that showed that motors with as little as 30k on them where .02-.04 out of spec on the stroke side of the piston.
That left 2 options on the table. Buy a new block or develop a sleeve. We went with the sleeves as now we have an option that doesn't mean throwing the existing block away as well as having a stronger than factory configuration, so win/win in my opinion.

Today is a good day.
The fuel rail just came back from the machine shop.
We decided since the internal diameter of the OEM rail was more than adequate we would modify it to receive the new larger injectors along with fittings on each end so we can use our new return system.
It still needs a little love with an emery cloth so forgive the minor messiness.

After the shoot is when cylinder one ran lean and popped the piston - that is what started me down this path to just go all out on the engine.
Current plan is to max out the T1 blower .. (1200cfm) and then switch to the larger V7 YSi (1600cfm) and max that out. The motor was built for it -- so we are going for gusto.

Probably 7-14 days away from firing it up / driving it around for shake down.
Then the break-in starts :tsk:
I'm excited. I can't imagine how you are feeling. I think it will be worst during break-in period. No lead foot syndrome okay?

No lead foot .. not even a little ..
Once my base flash arrives.. the the 1000 mile break-in commences ... it is going to be a royal pita. I am actually debating taking a week off work to just drive it back and fourth across Massachusetts.

You should do it Carmen. You have been without your car for so long. You should enjoy it. I am sure you can put on the 1200 miles within one week.

The car is actually at ACE (http://www.aceperformancesystems.com) located in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. They are a D/A Developmnt Partner and I happen to know the owners, so after my repeated visits / camp out sessions I was finally allowed to do some wrenching on my car.
So not DIY, but I have def. got my hands dirty.

Pay as I go .. ACE -D/A throw out options .. we discuss .. I then pay for what ultimately gets decided.
I save some $$ when I help out. For example, I made up all the Aeroquip Lines - instead of paying Nick. I leave the technical stuff to them, grunt work I try to take care of.
ZT-2 Rocks .. Love mine

I can drive it all day .. just not to break it in, in a day .. lol
I honestly hope to have it done within a couple weeks of first driving it. Then the head studs are checked for torque and we throw in the larger injectors + smaller pulley for the real fun.

I have put about 120 miles on her. She had an idling issue and that has been resolved now with a little re-tune. Here are a few quick videos as well as me driving it home last night.
The driving video was from my blackberry so this is really just to show that it is in-fact road worthy :)

Just waiting on the "Shark Edit" from Conforti.
Dyno? :hi:
We have debated taking it as it sits just to see what it is doing w/ the old injectors and pulley. Ripping it around it is pretty quick. Seeing about 8psi @ redline and AFRs 10:1.
We are of course going to swap the pulley and injectors, lean out the mixture and bump the timing before we are done w/ this configuration. As of right now it all sits waiting on Conforti.

D/A wants me to use the Conforti tool so we can flash the car here easily. Avoid shipping the DME back and fourth.

The tuning is going to be between ACE / DA / Conforti .. everyone has a hand in it now. The base files are going to be from D/A and Conforti, with the fine tuning coming from ACE.
As for the release date it was supposed to be out June 1st.
