View Full Version : HorsepowerFreaks M5 Twin Turbo Buildup Begins
HPF Chris
11-16-2007, 02:09 PM
We are now starting the buildup for our twin turbo E39 M5. Our goal is to have the car completed and running by the end of April and to take people for rides at Bimmerfest 2008 in Santa Barbara in early May.
This M5 will be twin turbo'd and will run our engine management system. It will also utilize a front mount intercooler and will have both pump gas and race fuel maps with a keyed switch similar to our M3 turbo kits. We will also be building a stage 2 "methanol" kit for it as well. The M5 engine is roughly 40% larger than the E46 M3 at 4.94L, and we expect the HPF "Stage 1" M5 kit to exceed the power generated by the HPF "Stage 1" M3 kit.
We're really excited to take this next step and feel the M5 will be an amazing car to drive with such a large displacement, 4 VANOS cams, and our turbo system. What a great 4-door grocery getter. :)
Our goal is to have these M5 turbo systems ready for sale by next Summer. If anyone is interested in getting on our email list for the M5 kits, please send an email to david@horsepowerfreaks.com.

Most tuners are having issues sourcing injectors for these things. DPI makes kits super difficult to produce, and the parts for kits like this don't exist yet.

V8 has two banks...
Can still work single turbo, but I guess its easier for exhaust routing to use two smaller turbos than a large one.

Just in case someone already hasn't...
Put me as first on the list to get a ride in that M5.
I've always wanted to see the potential of an aftermarket M5.

I believe Chris stated its all about market and decided to keep building on the M3 side, I wonder what he thinks now of this. a TT 5.0L V8 is no slouch, should have insane torque and perhaps an amazing city street and highway king since all the ends would be covered, including seating for passengers since it's a M5. :)

nice!!!!
e39 is sweet
I understand why you guys didn't do the m54, and why you are chasing the n54, but i imagine current production cars are the ones under the sun's brightest desire to burn money
how much sense would it make to make a e60 m5 kit while it's still in production? Wouldn't that be cool? And take all of the FI thunder from g-power's kit.... and have yet more displacement....
...though i understand its complications

HPF had a few kits in the pipeline when they first came out with the E46 M3 kits, if memory serves me they also had a E90 330i and E60 530i?

man i hate to be a buzz kill but does anyone even like those year m5s??? i never even see them on the road?? why not the new m5s i would think that would be a larger market for people upgrading. what about new m3s??? i hope im not the only one that thinks those cars have no style. there boring if you ask me. i see new m5s and m3s driving around in orange county every day all day. i never even see those. the people that drive those are an older crowd not looking to spend that kind of money. i dont get it??

Hahha, awesome. When I saw the HPF M3 go up for sale I immediately thought the S85 in the current M3 would be the next patient, that or the N54 twin turbo. But this is awesome.
The M5 is so often overlooked, I can't wait to see it done. It should def make some seriously ridiculous power given its size.
Good luck :)

Guess it's a matter of taste... I would seriously disagree as in my opinion, the E39 is (together with the E46) the last good-looking BMW. The E60 is an ugly monster compared to this.
E39 will go down as a classic, the E60 won't.
On the other hand, I do agree that there will be little market for this, probably why it's a 2 year old thread with no progress (I only just noticed this :banghead:)

E39 is hands down the best 5-series body style. Classic.

If that would be an E60 M5, I would save money to get me a nice used M5!

Agreed Agreed Agreed. I think the E39 has one of the most awesome road personalities of any bimmer built.. also have you actually ever driven one???
I had a e39 M5 for a while when I was deciding between M3 and M5 and I only went the M3 route because of the greater availability of tuning for it.... the M5 is just the most incredibly balanced, comfortable and well built bimmer EVER... plus it doesn't have the cr@ppy new computers which take so much away from the driver's experience.. it's just a manual 6, 3 pedals, 4 VERY big seats and hours of mad grins and 4 wheel slides with the kids and wife staring white-eyed out of the windows... rofl
GO GO GO HPF.. I'm SO there.... just please develop R hand as well as there are LOADS of these babies in the hands of UK and South African modifiers
