O.K. just wanted to know how many of you guys and girls out there are running a supercharger on a auto transmission. What kinda of car your drive, sc brand and what kinda of number are you putting up.
thanks ...

2001 330Ci
ASA Stage 1, Purchased from and installed at Technik
6.5psi
~70,000 miles on the car. Supercharger installed at ~52K.
~265 RWHP, ~245 ft/lbs. Torque
I do autox/track the car and drive the car very hard. So far, the S/C has held up. I do have an oil-cooler though and some extra piping to cool the alternator.
There are a number of people with S/C'd autos, including my friend who tracks his much more than I do. The limit of the tranny is ~310-320HP (at the crank), based on efforts by people to exceed that number via headers, more boost, etc. Anything beyond that, and its limp mode or worse.

Hmmm do you regret anything at all after going S/C route??

Im not sure myself to be honest, but I know for sure I dont get that much milage. I spend 99% of the time with the pedal on the floor. I fill up about every 2 to 3 days.

Sell me your sk+ and upgrade to stage 1 that way you'll have more power !
btw do you recommend the sk+ ? i guess its the best s/c for autos cus of low boost but is it worth the million euro infinitas charge ?

i'm running 6.5psi on mine so it's not making much less than the sk1. It's not worth it for me to change to the sk1 kit since I can't add any more power mods. Add headers or cams = tranny go kaboom!
I def like the sk+ kit, but if it's only a little more for the sk1, I'd go for that just for the intercooler.

The reason why I really posted this sc on auto was because i was looking for alittle more power in my car but i have a 328ci. Stock I belive it only come with 190hp and with the sc added on to it would bring me to 220 or 225 ? (someone please correct me if i am worng) so I was thinking the other day about to order one, saying to myself $4500 would only give me about 30whp? did not sound too good after that. I would go turbo just for more hp but the last 2 car's i had was turbo and it gave me a headach. From what I hear on this site is the SC's don't give that much of problem and most of them don't run on piggy back. witch is good for me, less tuning ...
Someone give me their input on this.
thanks Johnny

your 190hp is crank hp. Depending on the type of dyno you use, I'd imagine you were somewhere in the range of 155-165whp. Also depending on what type of s/c you install, it should give you plenty more than 30whp. Anywhere from 60-100whp sounds more like it.
Any kit you purchase from the well known companies should require you to send in your ECU for them to flash and that's it as far as tuning goes.
As far as 0-60... I have no idea.

You definitely need to dyno your car because not all cars are the same. For example, I only dyno'd at ~170 RWHP, which is weaker than expected, as similar cars with auto trannies were putting down ~180 RWHP on the same dyno. For me, the S/C added nearly 100 RWHP.
I didn't measure my 0-60 stock, but according to BMW, its ~7.1 sec. The faster I ever ran was 5.1, but on avg, its more like 5.3-5.5. I think the guys with manual trannies were able to go below 5 seconds and hang with M3s.
What really sucks though, is that I'm still slower than a stock 335i :tsk: :bawling:.

i don't know if you can do this to your 330 if so get a higher penion gear that will give you a faster off the line start....
i don't know if you have this already but did you ever think about geting a light weight fly wheel.. that can help you put down alittle more h/p to the back wheels..it is more better transfering h/p from the crank to the back wheels....
my luck you have these things already lolll hope you don't mind me saying these things... just wanted to help you get alittle more b/w/h/p.... i lov your ride by the way....

Isn't that too much power for an automatic ? i've just bought the VF stage 1 with 6PSI because i think its the most conservative one for autos but im still afraid my tranny will melt ! do u drive your car hard ? nice car btw .

i have a ASA charger from technik and have not regreted one moment with it. even with my auto tranny im running 5.0(all time best)- 5.5(worst yet). i've been able to keep up with M3 and have beaten poorly driven ones. i do have plans to switch out my auto for a SMG tranny but have not had the time to invest into such a project. make sure you get tranny software and take full advantage of this for your car. GL with getting a s/c

Supercharging your car is the best money you will ever spend. After that improve the suspension and then hang it up. By the way, there is such a thing as going overboard with modding to seek power.

any 5speed auto on our cars are rated up 325 lbs of torque to the crank anything close to or more then that and tranny = dead. most s/c places will tell you to run 5 PSI to 6 max instead of pushing 6.5PSI because at that point your at 320lbs of torque. last time i check i'm running a solid 6 to 6.5 lol. in anycase i'd love a solid 5/6 speed manual but i have a couple of issue's 1: LA traffic 2: bad knee's(my knee caps on both legs move out of place by about a inch) 3: i have a paddleshifter set up already(thanks vince yet again lol). plus a SMG tranny is the same as a 6speed so i can go to a higher PSI if i desired.
o and definitely get a suspension system after the s/c as well as brakes (more HP means you gotta slow it down faster lol). you'd probably needs rims as well to fit new larger brakes so think about those 3 mods mainly (those are the 3 im looking at now) anything after that is more of a maint.(control arms etc) and if you want to go track(in which cash think of a tranny swap for sure) hope this 0.02 helps

The tranny is actually rated at 325 Nm (240 lb-ft), not 325 lb-ft. That's why the BMW code for the ZF 5HP19 is A5S 325Z = Automatic 5 Speed, 325 Nm, ZF manufactured.
I guess much like most parts of the engine, the tranny is supposed to be over-engineered to withstand higher input torque. Although from our experiences, it looks like there's very little leeway given the tranny failures on this forum.
Really depends on the history of your own tranny. My opinion would be that if the ATF/filter were changed regularly, then the tranny should last you the lifetime of the car. If not, then it's a ticking money pit.

Here is the data sheet of a GM step tranny: Hydra-Matic 5L40-E Transmission (M82/MX5) (http://media.gm.com/division/2004_prodinfo/powertrain/automatic/index.html)
GM is rated to 250 ft-lbs of torque.
ZF is rated to 240 ft-lbs of torque.

None really, except to maintain it regularly by changing the ATF and filter. I plan on changing the ATF every year, knowing how bad it looked like the first time I changed it even if it was only at 30K miles.

search the forum for Level 10 , its a company that sells kits that strengthen the tranny , but i dont know if they're any good cus they have bad rep on this forum .

Since I have been tracking (not drag race pls) my step since 2002, I can offer a couple of tips for supercharged Steps:
1. Replace transmission fluid yearly. I use RedLine D4ATF.
2. Transmission filter bi-yearly.
3. Replace your transmission heat exchanger thermostat (PN: 17111437362) . This is usually performed when you replaced your expansion tank.
4. Do not manual hard shift when engine/transmission is still cold. Drive it in D for the first 30min and really there is no reason to redline either. If you have a oil temp gauge and a transmission fluid temp gauge, wait for OT to warm up to 80C (176F for those metrically challenged) and TransT to 75C (167F).
5. Changed your coolant, plus related parts (water pump, thermostat etc) as needed. Look for coolant leaks. If the engine runs hot, the transmission will run hot.
6. Last but not least, add a secondary transmission fluid cooler if you desire. This has been helping me tremendously during the hot summer months on the tracks.
