Having owned and raced a 3 series on the track, let me tell you that the M5 (which I have driven aggressively) is one of the sweetest cars out there. The 540 is also nice, but the M5 is pure sex. It isn't overrated to those who have not driven the car. It's not about quarter mile times, it's about the complete visceral feeling. The stick and the clutch are mated so beautifully.
