anyone have this? It is the least expensive SC for my car... thinking about buying it, but it doesn't have an intercoolr.

The VF Engineering kit we sell uses the Vortech charger. You'll be more than happy with the results...

Is the Vortech unit professional install only, or can a decent homegrown mechanic handle it?

I don't believe it requires any special tools or custom modifications. It's pretty much a bolt on type kit. When I finally decide to get my SC, I will definitely DIY. It has been done successfully by many people on this forum and I couldn't imagine that you would encounter anything that you (or someone else here) couldn't figure out.
