What is the proper operating range of engine oil temperature?

I just installed a bunch of Innovate gadgets and I want to set an alarm if the oil temp goes too high. I've been searching but there are conflicting recommendations.

For water temp it's actually easy. I use the OBC Hidden Codes (http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=44922) and just observe function 7.0 (engine coolant temp). I see that coolant temp ranges from 88°C-98°C (190°F-209°F). It's at the lower range when driving hard to protect the engine and at the higher range for fuel economy (you gotta love our electronically-controlled thermostats).

Unfortunately there's no OBC function to read oil temp. I can only read it using a laptop based scan tool. So what's the maximum safe operating oil temp?

In case you should ask, I posted here since people who browse the FI section are a lot more knowledgeable about engines and gauges than any other section.

with a supercharger I run around the 190-220 range.

i think anything above 240 is pretty hot and 260 is dangerous.

I have my oil temp gauge max alarm set at 225ish and rarely on a hot day run into the beeeeeeeeeep alarm.

Water 100C
Oil 110C

Beyond 120 STOP and cool your car.

No matter what oil you use beyond 130C all oil will loose its ability to lubricate.

Thanks, I'll set the oil temp alarm then at 110°C / 230°F.

I have an oil temp gauge in my 330 and even under hard driving I never see anything over 240F....during normal everyday driving I see around 200F

As soon as I ran AMSoil High Performance oil, I instantly dropped 10deg in oil temp. I also never broke 240F on my ASA supercharged ZHP. And about 230-235 running on the TS on my ZHP (yes, it runs cooler).
