So I got there early purposely so I could have one of the first runs, and get out to make it to the local meet... Just my luck, the first guy to run blows up his mustang 3/4 of the way down the strip, so we had to wait ~45 minutes for them to clean it up, etc. Because of this I was only able to get one run in and still make it to the meet... Bogged of the line and pulled a 2.235 60', but finished the run 13.299 @ 110.75mph!! With that trap I'm sure I can hit the 12s with a better launch... I don't have a scanner so I'm going to snap a pic of the slip and upload now.

edit: here's the slip

thanks! I'm really happy with my trap speed, and I think it would've been even higher if I would've spun instead of bogged...

I'm gonna finally go through with that OBD I manifold swap over summer. I would switch to the M54B30 manifold, but last I checked there was some problems fitting the cable TB from my motor due to space restrictions. The two runners that surround the TB on the M54 manifold are too big, and the cable TB doesn't fit between them where it needs to mount :(

I'm going to dyno before/after with the OBD I manifold, and if it helps, cool, if not, I'm switching back LOL.

That is awesome!

Instead of pages and pages of discusion, we've got someone with the balls to try it and see.

I'm still going to highly recommend slicks for the strip; once you try them you'll never go back.

David has a fair amount of reinforcement done.

Yeah, I know he has, but still the fact that the early e46s are so notorius for this issue, and that fact that it has happened before, would be enough to scare me away. And with an open diff, I personally dont see the need for slicks. Now once David gets an LSD in that thing I think his 60 foot would be better, and he may get the numbers he wants even without slicks.

Regardless, not my place to speak for David's opinion - but, LSD shouldn't make that much difference.

If the LSD is locking, wheels are slipping, and if wheels are slipping then you aren't getting the most out of the car. Might help for poor track prep or bad tires, but in general it shouldn't make much difference on good runs.

That carries over to better tires. Most 350z guys running a lot post the same times regardless of having the VLSD or open diff, weight and power differences play a much bigger role (just so you know I'm not bsing this on theory alone).

With open diff tire scrubs - you want to do a couple short bursts to clean both tires though

I surely don't want my subframe to rip out again LOL, that thing is rigged in, but Tyler's right, if it rips out, then at least I know my car is fast :lmao: My engine is holding up pretty damn good too.. m52tu ftw.

I'm swapping an M3 rear end in over summer, 3.62 and lsd FTW, mpg FTL

Tyler, I'm running PS2s right now, and I think I can cut a 1.9X 60' with them, even with my open diff, these things actually grip!

Yeah, the biggest limitation for you is going to be getting contact patch.

Do you have adjustable camber arms in the rear? If so you could dial some negative camber out before the track and it would help substantially.

There are a number of tricks I've read to try that I haven't....mustang guys SWEAR buy unbolting a front sway bar end link, but I don't know if thats a solid axle only benefit or not.

My car has relatively little camber in the rear, and not as much camber gain as the E46. Otherwise numbers are similar for launch - I cut 1.9's consistently, you should be able to given decent track prep and a good launch. It takes getting used to, 50 passes on my car before I got to that point .

Good luck btw, you still planning on running up here this week?

I actually came home already, Moroso on wed. though.

I have about -3 degress of rear camber LOL, I think its 2.8 exactly. I bogged on this run, but the tires hooked nicely, I'm sure I can get at least a 2.0 @ moroso.

Street radials are going to do you no favours. At least get some drag radials under there!

3 degrees negative camber is cutting your throat too, dial it in slightly positive to go for a neutral attitude under a hard launch.

Activ3
04-28-2008, 12:49 PM
Thanks for the tips Kenny!

I'd love to get a set of radials, and may deeply consider it after I feel I'm done with my engine, but in the midst of me still messing with the motor, I'm just going to keep the car as-is so I can compare trap speeds after I do each mod. Once I have a setup I feel comfortable with, I'll adjust camber, and get some nice track wheels so I can attempt a trophy run :D

In my opinion, there is something you could do that would further re-enforce the mounting points without going to a cage setup like mine.

I think even 3.62 is going to be a bit mild, but it's your call.

For now, I'd recommend getting as many passes on the car as you can. I still consider myself an amature at the drag strip...

Drag radials will not alter your trap speed at all, but they should make a nice dent in your ET!

For drag racing you want a much shorter diff, I used 427 in my M Coupe.

I'd go more aggressive, but the car is my daily driver, and I only have a 5spd, so cruising rpm is already going to suck :excited:
