View Full Version : Stupid question about superchargers...

Just wondering, if I get a supercharger for my car in the future, is my gas efficiency going to go up or down?
If so how much?
Is it worth it?
Can someone link me to a study or something not as questionable as Yahoo!Questions.... thanks !

You will take a large mileage hit. The hit is too big for me to be happy with, but gas prices here are higher than they will be out there.

how big of a hit are we talking about here?

Supercharging will change your gas mileage from 20 to about 10-13 MPG at the best. I have a friend who supercharged his M Coupe, he gets about 8MPG so I figure it's about 12 for the 330. For your car there are several options for supercharging, just depends where you want to go and how much you have to spend...

I get 32mpg with my supercharger. As long as you dont drive hard everytime you drive the car your mpg should go up.

thanks on the response jurrian
that mpg drop sounds HORRIBLE :yikes:
i guess its all about parasitic loss .... hmmm
how hard is it to turbocharge a e46?

There's a kit coming out for our cars. $7000. Check the FI forum.

I don't know why people are saying that your miles per gallon will drop so much. Read post #34. That is coming from a guy that actually had a supercharger.

I'm getting way better than that with my ESS TS. I haven't had it all that long yet (getting close to 2 months now) so my driving style is still geared more towards "fun" and less towards efficiency but I've lost 3 mpg at the most (in city traffic). I should try driving easy for a week and see what it's really capable of from a fuel economy stand point.

That said, if you're worried about fuel economy and plan to drive your car like your grandma for fuel economy, why spend all that money on a supercharger?

Unless they are getting on it every time they get into their car.

HorsepowerFreaks is developing a turbo for the 330 as we speak. Should be complete in december.

My MPG definitely didnt get better with my TS1, even when I drive very conservatively!

According to my obc I'm getting 30 mpg with my ESS TS1+ (7.5 psi), but I feel this is as a result of the bigger injectors throwing off the readings. I'm probably getting 18-20 mpg but I need to verify that.

quite a while now, the fuel consumption doesn't seem all that bad to me compared with the 4.4L X5 I was driving before (which doesn't say much). With the gas prices the way they are now though I am envious of my friend's 330 which gets close to 30 mpg (highway)

Turbo's the WTG but that's just me, even on my old beast (431whp SRT-4 3R) when I drove like a normal "concerned citizen" I got like 35+MPG. Depending on how much fun I had though it would usually dip about 5-10MPG :)

Last I checked, more air + less fuel = lean condition...
This is a "less than desireable" situation, no? :hmm:

Just because your car has a charger doesn't mean it can't be driven like it's stock. When you're not slamming the pedal to the floor and just driving normally then the charger or turbo isn't "forcing" air into the motor and the motor is just sucking the amount of air it needs on it's own.
But yes, running lean (just like running rich) are less then desirable, this is why the stock fuel injectors are replaced with FI kits.

Wow..... please don't guess about MPG.
There is absolutely no reason why you should get 12 mpg from a supercharger kit unless you are Stg. 3+ and even then you should get better than that.
I ran around 27 mpg before the supercharger. Around 24 after the supercharger. About 21 after a diff swap from a 2.93 to a 3.38.

I average 27 mpg with an AA stage 1. Just imagine if I had gone for the twin screw.

its all depends on how you drive if your not gunning it at all times which is when the boost builds ur gas milage wont get affected too much....now wit a twin screw if ur flooring it constantly then it will waste more gas so it comes down to how u drive n the type of s/c too
I got ESS TS1 on automatic for about 10000kms now, average 360km/L so around 7 km/L.
This is around 80% stop and go city driving + 20% highway, actually an improvement compare to what it used to be around 5.5km/L with air con on all the time. With the TS installed you will no longer need to pump the gas deep on every start

The point is you dont drive in boost therefore there is no more air. The injectors are larger but there opening time isn't that long. I am not running lean I have AF gauge I can tell. Either way you look at it the gas to air % is pretty much the same as stock. The whole point of why you get better mpg is because your foot is not on the pedal as much as it used to be.

wow ... im so envious of all of you guys with your high 20s MPG ... the heighest I got was 22.5 with 80% highway 20% city ....
now that I have moved down to the city I'm at 18.3 ... :(
