There are more pictures from that series of torture tests. It's insane, he still uses the gun for some competition shooting too!

I'd go with a G17 then. 9mm is a lot cheaper than .45, so you can practice more and the increased sight radius gives you the potential for more accuracy.
Rent a bunch of guns at the range first to see what gun fits your hand best and which one you are most accurate with.

There are slip on rubber grips made by Hogue, Get AGrip and Pachmayr which increases the grip diameter for guys with bigger hands.;)

I never really cared for glocks. I have a Beretta 40 S&W that i love. Love the feel and the caliber and after about 50 rounds its clean as a whistle with the ammo i use

Love Glocks, know have two of them. G17 9mm and G21SF .45 ACP.
I also have a HK USP .40 and Sig P226 .40, with a Springfield Loaded .45 coming in next month.
With the high price of ammo these days, a good 9mm Glock, with a G17 or G19, depending on hand fit, would be a good idea. If you use Winchester white box 9mm from Walmart, it's only about 19 cents a round.
Plus using Speed Dot or Cor-Bon hallow point +P rounds will work just as well for self defense as a .45 round.
