So I am thinking about getting a new head unit for my e46 sedan, but am not completely sure yet. I have seen single din units installed, and all I have to say about it is it looks like crap. Besides going with a double din unit with a LCD screen, does anything look better than a single din unit? It just looks so out of place and makes the dash look cheap. Is double din the only real way to go???

Yeah I agree with you, the only real thing that looks ok is the double-din setups. I've held back on doing anything because i want a HU with high quality audio components like the Pioneer P88RSII or somethign similar, but that's only single din.
The associated costs and time with a double din is prohibitive in my opinion - it seems like only one guy makes bezels of an acceptable quality. will stick with stock i think.

The only problem I have with going to a double DIN unit is the price of the unit itself (a good quality one that will last awhile as well as "fit" the BMW name) and the price the the bezel.... just need one more credit card now lol

That is exactly what have been thinking. I mean even being able to get a double din navigation unit for 699 brand new still bring the cost to a grand after getting everything that you need and that does not even consider the time you have to wait for the bezel to get in and installing everything. It looks great and I may still do it but I can say that it will be a very slow process. Not trying to get the Credit card debt up.

For what reason do you want a new headunit?

Go with a fold out. Gives you the double din GPS capabilities (touchscreen more often than not) without any major mods.

It would be much easier an cheaper to buy an external gps unit. Especially if you want a single din unit to look stock.
