no the newer versions the 40gb and 80gb require you to pay for a DL in order to play PS2 games, the release versions like my 60gb have the software already installed. its just another way to make a fast buck :rolleyes:

I asked at Best Buy about this and the guy at the counter told me there is a download patch you can get from Sony so all PS3's will play PS2 games. :hmm:

80/20 gig has the software to play it depending on the sku number (serial when it was launched i believe) the 60gig has the hardware to run ps2 games. i dont think there's any good ps2 game enough for me to justify to look for one. i would just get a 40 gig and call it a day, i pick up a used one for under $200 with one controller, bought a laptop harddrive on newegg (320gig now), hack/mod with linux and other programs, the ps3 is now the ultimate HD multimedia in my living room. just my .02 cent.

I dont get it...why is the 80gig 2 different prices...and is the 80gig actually 99.99 after the $150 gift card? :hmm: If so, I will buy a second one just for travel...:thumbsup:

The new 80GB is not BC(Backward Compatible), model number CECHKxx. The older 80GB is, model number CECHExx. I was lucky to find a brand new Metal Gear edition, model number "CECHExx MG".

Easiest way to distinguish BC or not is by the USB ports, 4 USB = BC, 2 USB is not BC.

I have an 80 gig that will play them. I've played it 3 times since I got it. Still have the box and manuals for it. I just use it as my DVD player now. Pm me an offer BTW I'm local too
