I am an engineer and have some computer programming/cercuits training and experience. I have experience tuning stand alone kits like UTECs for WRXs. I am pretty good friends with some insane programmers and integrated circuit designers for top companies.

What would it take to learn how to build a stand-alone EMS system? For a small business like HPF to come up with one by themselves it must not be overly complicated.

Where to start?

Edit: lets say I have infinite time/money-> i realize this might cost more than the 5k kit from HPF

HPF didn't come up with their own stand alone. They're using the AEM one.

Megasquirt is out there, but I don't think it can handle e-throttle, multiple t-bodies etc. Lots of guys are running it on older cars tho...

We hired AEM's lead application engineer to develop a plug-n-play stand alone for all of the E46's and E39's. As much as everyone would like to simply buy an AEM and plug it in, that just isn't a reality for the E46 M3 unless you have someone experienced to develop it for you.

That HPF standalone is specific to the e46 M3? ^^
