So my friend has his stock turbo/intercooler from his '05 GTI, and when I was lookin at it yesterday I was wonderin if it'd be worth installing it on my 323i. It's a little turbo, yea, but I figure a little boost is better than no boost right?
The turbo, intercooler, and wastegate would be free of course, and I can probably have a custom exhaust manifold made cheap, and the rest of the plumbing isn't hard. What about tuning tho? Is that hard to have done or can I just go to a local speedshop that has a dyno?
Would it be worth the install? Would the little turbo work with my 2.5 I6?

no it wouldn't and it would be too much blood and wasted money trying to get the cheaply made custom manifold, and too much down time on the car to be happy. And with NickG having finally put his kit out in the market, i doubt you can hire him to fly to your garage to tune your stock dme to ever work with a yerbo off a vee-dub.
It would be cheaper and less blood, easier and quicker to come to the conclusion that,
"man this **** wasnt worth it, no wonder it took the e46 gods almost 6years and ten to make a non-m turbo kit"
if you go with the ebay turbo kit.(which is a quicker screwing yourself, not like the slow rotisserie screwing youre talking about.)
edit:as you can see im hungry

Anything is possible with enough time and money, but this is an idea that should be left in the idea phase. The GTI intercooler and turbo is hardly adequate for that car, let alone yours. By the time you got everything up and going, you'd have spent more than just going out and buying a kit that works perfectly and is engineered for your car.

The problem isn't so much with plumbing and getting it to fit, but finding someone to tune it is difficult

cheap boost ideas have gotten very little distance in the e46 community. I'm sorry, you're probably not that special. If it were conceivable, I would've done it. I found Nick's TT kit to be the closest thing to that realization. I waited and saved for so long, waiting for a good power solution, that when Nick's kit came out, I was nearly there on money. It's not cheap, $6900 is a good bit, but it's because of the quality of everything. From the quality of the blow-through maf tuning to the high grade materials and components. And though not cheap, it still offers more performance for less money than its competitors, pushing fewer psi. And there are plenty of upgrade "stage" levels available.... or there is promise, at least. The kit is top-notch, there are few parts that you could upgrade and they are those parts that you're unlikey to want to upgrade. And the kit itself can support a lot of power, far more, by my estimation than any other without a build.

Allright, I hear where everyone's comin from. And I figured the hardest part would be tuning it. But I doubt there's only one person in the country that can tune it. What is so difficult about tuning this specific car for a small amount of boost that my guy at my local shop can't do it? Also, my goals for this project, should I put this project in motion, aren't very great. It's my DD, I'm getting a turbo/intercooler for free, a lil bit of boost, maybe like 5-7psi, couldn't hurt right? Especially when my stock hp/tq is 170/181.
I dunno, I'll take everyone's word for it, but I find it hard to believe that tuning this car for such a small amount of boost is so hard.

Well if you find it hard to believe, why don't you believe this: If tuning was easy, all of us non-M guys would be running custom turbos pushing nice amount of horse power. Trust me, your not the first one to think about this!

Then go ahead and do it. We'll sit back and watch as you spend countless amounts of time and money and end up with a poorly driving car.

I hate to say it, 'cause it sounds so closed off, but i think that there may be only one person who genuinely knows the software well enough to make the car drive like stock- and Nick achieves just that. I mean, from variable cam timing on both cams and a drive-by wire as well as a switched intake manifold. And software with arbitrary numbers and values instead of degrees. Siemens and BMW did not design these computers to be modified. This is not an evo or honda, you're not going to donwload a tune, not yet at least- hopefully shark edit will be out soon to help us all blow our motors very quickly.
