Hey gents-
I'm looking to pick up an AR soon so I need someone with knowledge to help me customize it.
I want to make an M4 clone (same barrel length, same spin ratio (i think thats what it is) 1:7?, etc. I also want a gas piston action.
I really don't care what brands are used, but I've heard good things about Rock River and I really don't think you could go wrong with Colt...
Optics will be decided later but I could certainly use some advice on sights.
Show me what you've got! Price is of no concern at the moment so don't let that restrict you.

Mine....
Spikes Lower
Stag tacticcal Stock
RRA LPK
CA Pivot verticle grip
Noveske Light Reece 14.5 upper for DI
or
LWRC m6a2 upper for gas piston - What you want.

Best gas piston upper if you ask me. LMT a close second, but the front block is ugly.
Aimpoint, Eotech or Acog Trijicon for optics
Make sure to get a UAV Jammer.

I've got both of my AR's sitting on Double star Lowers, one was a complete lower, the other had a parts kit (RRA).
Both are 1:7 twist, one is a midlength CMMG 16" and the other is a BCM m4 profile. In terms of optics, Aimpoint >> Eotech. Trijicon Acogs are nice....but extremely pricey.
Sorry, no pics...I'm not keen of my gun pictures floating around the interwebz.

14.5" + 1.5" flash suppressor. It has to be 16" to no be considered SBR.
Get a Sun Devil lower....so pimp

So is the flash supressor considered in the length under the law or would I have to get a 16 in barrel? I guess you could get a tax stamp for an she couldn't you?

Since the suppressor on M4 variants are fixed, it is legally considered a 16" barrel. No tax stamps required. :craig:

Ok cool. Where would I buy one like that? Is there a specific brand that I should look at that has the 1:7, etc?

Any major manufaturer will sell them - anything from just barrels to complete uppers. You might also try gunbroker.com, although I don't know what prices are like right now. Rock river has a substantial backlog for complete rifles, but (from what I hear) not a whole lot of waiting on parts. Without knowing your budget it is hard to give a recommendation - look through the other AR threads around here for the brands to stick with.

Ok. So what other parts do I need other than a lower, upper, stock, and sights (assuming the upper is complete)?

Assuming you get a complete lower, you're in business. Ammo and mags!

My advice is get whatever you can before its too late.
if you want good, get a custom by white oak or compass lake, get a krieger barrel, tell them you want it 1:7. I have 2 lowers, a spike and a RRA and both are good. For a stock, I like magpuls carbine stock. Optics go with eotech, trijicon, or aimpoint. I have a CAA monopod with taclight slot.

you're asking for two different things...if you want a gas piston, wait for the civvy version of the 416. LWRC is nice, but expensive. If you want an M4 that's quality, go CMMG (www.cmmginc.com) for the upper and any lower will work with a quality LPK. I have a Sabre Defense lower with a RRA LPK, Vltor stock. With CMMG they're backed up but you can customize pretty much everything about the upper...handguard, barrel, sights, EVERYTHING...best M4 clone I have owned.

Thanks for the replies guys...I've learned a ton!
I've read alot of good stuff about the hk416, but we probably aren't going to see it in the US for a loooonng time.
I think I may buy a complete ar and forget building it. I think I might grab a Colt M4A3 6920...it's di, not gp but there's always a conversion...anyone have experience with one of these?

Civilian 416 is going to be 4k. Twice the price of the LWRC. The civilian 416 is also going to have proprietary parts that will not allow it to be used on AR platform lowers like the 416.

Colt is one of the top AR manufacturers. Can't go wrong with the 6920. They are pricey right now though. I prefer low profile monilithic uppers though. Check out Noveske Rifles.

Yea the idea of a monolithic upper is cool, but they're pretty expensive...I know colt's variant, the 6940, is like an additional 700+ bucks!
I'll have a look at Noveske

Anyone know where to pick up one of these at a discount? I know that request is almost ludicrous...maybe a military discount?

What happens to a dealers inventory if a new ban becomes law? Would those weapons be grandfathered in? I figured they would be scared to carry too many in stock because they'd be stuck with them and only able to sell to LE if the ban went into effect...
I want one.......

OK new question! I was just looking at the Colt again and was wondering...if the barrel part of the gun doesn't have a lower rail, can you attach a bipod to it? I kinda want to use this with one of those sometimes...
EDIT: Another related question...can a rail system be added in place of the blocky foregrip on the barrel?
And another...Let's say I wanted to acquire a supressor down the road...could the barrel be modified to accept it? (Threading?)

I need an opinion. I think this guy is asking too much for this rifle (though it seems to have everything I want)...what does everyone think?

In all honesty (and I can't believe I'm going to say this) that is not a bad deal for that rifle right now. Since it is available, that makes a difference. If it were any other time I'd tell you it was a few hundred bucks over priced. He's including spare stock parts too, which is nice to have (and possibly resell).

What about value for money? Could I build something better for cheaper?

I would build something. For the same price you can get an LMT or Noveske monolithic upper, a lower, LPT, stock and have 100 bucks left over. Colts are great, but 2000 is just insane. Weren't 6920's going for 1200 not too long ago?

Daniel defense is the cream of the crop. The specs there are ones you'll want to look for. However the Colt u listed is a pretty damn good deal for the moment.

Thanks for the DD info...it does look like a top-notch unit and its priced reasonably. I'm going to wait a few days and see what happens with that Colt...if I can swoop in on it at that price, I'll grab it. If not, I'll look closer at these...

OK another opinion needed.
I think I'm gonna buy a Colt...I've researched the other options and this seems like exactly what I want. I shot one on sunday as a matter of fact (a 6920)
Now...I can either get the 6920 (16 in. barrel) this week OR I can get a 6921 (14.5 in. barrel) and wait like 4 months for the NFA paperwork to get back while my rifle is locked up in the gunshop.
My dream was to always own an authentic M4A1, but seeing as that's impossible, I want the closest legal thing to it. I think the M4A1 has a 14.5 in. barrel which is why I'm sorely tempted to wait and get the 14.5...
On the other hand, the 16 in. will be more accurate, I don't have to wait on it, and I don't have to waste $200 on a damn tax stamp.
I don't know what to do...I think I'll probably just get the 16 in. unless someone talks me out of it. Anyone have any comment?

what about a 14" barrel with a flash suppressor on it? that way it meets requirements of a 16", but you actually have a 14". But I think there is a stipulation the flash suppressor has to be permanently fixed in place. I'm still trying to decide what I want to do. I have a lead on a S&W stripped lower, or order a stag complete and wait till August at the earliest.

I thought about that, but I may want to add a real suppressor later and that would require me to remove the flash suppressor so it can't be permanently affixed.
I've heard a ton of good stuff about STAG so I don't think you can go wrong there...maybe try gunbroker to get it sooner?

I ordered a Stag-15 Type2 last week from Dynamic Armaments out of AZ. It just shipped this morning. They are sending the complete upper and lower seperate (apparently Stag saves on taxes this way). The lower is going to the FFL and the upper and accessories are coming directly to me. Now if I could just find some bulk ammo!

That's the place in AZ I found the complete lower! I called them and emailed them yesterday, and I haven't heard from them yet. I found on a forum that hes a police officer out there and a great guy to deal with. I hope he calls soon, and he hasn't sold out of them! I have an FFL holder lined up already too.
