Bushy "post ban" carbine. One of the only few that are NY legal.
Picked it up a week ago, already put a quad rail, VFG, and light on her wit more stuff on order!
Hurray for my new money pit!

Good work. Keep firing rounds to piss off the liberals.
If you really want to piss them off, get some targets of libs and shoot at them. Do they still have targets of Jane Fonda? They used to but I have not seen them in a while. They have some of Osama, but he's a mass murdering terrorist, not a liberal.

Do you use a standard gun cleaning kit or what do you use?
Have you ever used gun scbrub? It dissolves the carbon right off the gun.
Just spray it and the carbon runs right off. good stuff.

I can't speak for everywhere but my local ranges get PISSED when people try to use targets with pictures, regardless of who the person is.

What do you mean the line is hot?
Shooting range lingo. :craig:
When "the firing line is hot" that means it's time to shoot. Everyone has to stay behind the firing line. When the "line is clear" then it safe to travel down range and check your targets.
If you really want to piss them off, get some targets of libs and shoot at them. Do they still have targets of Jane Fonda? They used to but I have not seen them in a while. They have some of Osama, but he's a mass murdering terrorist, not a liberal.
Speaking of which...the gun laws here in NY are so crazy. At the shooting range I go to target with silouettes shaped like people are NOT allowed. :nono:

I have two cleaning kits actually...one is by Otis and the other is by Hoppes. The Otis kit comes with an all-in-one cleaner/lube (which I don't really like the idea of) while the Hoppes comes with a separate solvent and lube. I think I prefer the Hoppes method.

You're right guys.... I should have known better! Here is a pick from the day I picked her up:
http://filebox.vt.edu/users/coneal/IMAGE_358sm.jpg
It looks like a standard AR but as mentioned it's a Bushmaster "post ban" carbine. The assault weapons ban is still in effect here in NY state but with some minor changes to a standard AR we can get around the ban.
An "assault weapon" is defined as (a) a semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least two of the following evil features: (i) a folding or telescoping stock; (ii) a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon; (iii) a bayonet mount; (iv) a flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; (v) a grenade launcher.
This rifle has a pistol grip so there's my one evil feature. Then Bushmaster shaves off the bayonet lug, "pins" or "permanently fixes" the telescoping stock in the full open position (it is no longer adjustable), and welds on a muzzle break instead of screwing on a flash suppressor. At first glance a muzzle break looks like a flash suppressor but it's quite different. The muzzle break is intended to reduce recoil without impeding the flash. These changes make the rifle New York legal.
One other important note, magazine capacity in NY is restricted to 10rounds max. Hence the tiny mag that ships with this rifle. But there are ways around that also. If you can find 30rd mags that were produced before 1994 when the AWB was enacted then they are legal to possess.
Of course I managed to find some. :4ngie:

Price is worth discussing even if only to help you guys in free states appreciate how good you have it.
I'm sure someone in a non-BAN state could duplicate this setup for under 2k. I'm a few bucks over that thanks to the "pay-to-play premium" we have to deal with here. We pay pretty much 2-3x what you guys in free states might pay. And I still have to put together an optics package.
Some guys can build ARs dripping with evil features for $800-1k. MSRP on this rifle is $1300, if you're willing to sit on a waiting list for 3 months you can pick them up locally for $14-1600. The guy had this one on the shelf for $1800. Ridiculous. Alternately he was offering a used/repaired colt AR for $1770 (unthreaded barrel, A2 stock, fixed carry handle). Ridiculous. Long story short, we came to a mutually reasonable agreement somewhere between $1400 and $1770.
Factor in ammo, mods, shooting gear and it can get expensive. But I look at this as my new hobby. And like car modding, you're either going to do it, or you're not. And you do it for personal enjoyment, not to make anyone else happy. In that regard, it's money well spent, in my opinion.
The great thing about ARs though is that they have high and low end versions of pretty much everything from hardware, to optics, to ammo. In that way they are far more customizable than say....an e46.

I've wanted a SIG for like 10 years now, ever since the 550 which wasn't available in the US. The 556 classic swat is very near the top of my dream gun list.
How do you like that ACOG? What magnification did you go with?
My only issue with ACOG is the lack of variable magnification. For that reason I'm sort of leaning towards the Leupold CQ/T but I'm still on the fence.

I went with an ACOG to go with the type of weapon that it is... Magnification is only x3 which is totally fine... The longest range nearest me is a 200 yard range.
Leupold is a great scope, but for me a waste since I don't have enough land or nearby ranges to use it to its potential.

Yep, this one is a flat top. That handle comes off and there's a rail underneath.
Oh damn, I just realized that bi-pod closes and the legs go up into, becoming a forward grip, correct?? That is so fukin sexy
Yessir...the legs are spring loaded and independently height adjustable. They come rocketing out at the touch of a button. Functionally it's a pretty sweet combo. My goal is to try the front of the rifle as light and simple as possible.
I'm an American, so I should own one.
That's the spirit! The AR-15 is the patriot's weapon of choice. :craig:

I notice you don't run back up iron sights with the ACOG. With a fixed 3x scope do you any trouble with target acquisition at ranges under 100yds?
See, that's what I'm worried about...picking a nice powerful scope then being screwed in the event that I ever need to pop something at close range.
Meanwhile:
Magpul MS2 Multi Mission Sling and Ambidextrous Sling Attachment Point (ASAP) arrive this week.

Actually underneath the ACOG, there is a foldable BUIS. Not the greatest, but it works. I was looking at a Diopter type rear sight, but want to do more research on it.
With the ACOG, I would say anything over 50yd is fine, but I never really measured to be honest, so I would say 50yd give or take...

Today...was a good day.
Woke up, dumped another couple hundred rounds through the AR and got the new optics dialed in. Then hit up a local spot and picked up a T-bone with all the trimmings for lunch. :craig:
http://filebox.vt.edu/users/coneal/newmods1.jpg
http://filebox.vt.edu/users/coneal/awesome.jpg
Newly added since last time:
Daniel Defense QD rail mount sling attachment point
Leupold CQT 1x-3x Scope w/ illuminated reticle
Larue Tactical QD scope mount
Magpul "MBUS" back up sight
Magpul "ASAP" rear sling attachment plate
Magpul "MS2" multi-mission sling
At this point I think this project is pretty much done. I can't think of anything else I really need. As it stands it feels like a pretty solid goto rifle.
Any suggestions on spare parts I should keep around??

Bushmaster sells a "spare parts kit" here (http://www.bushmaster.com/products.asp?cat=501), about half way down the page. It comes complete with every spring in the ar, even the buffer spring. I ordered one but I doubt it will arrive anytime soon. Your rifle looks "very evil" :str8pimpi. By the way, are you guys in NY required to have a bullet button, or is that for California ARs? For us here, we can have a rifle full of evil features, sans grenade launcher, as long as we have a bullet button installed.
