Business CD keeps switching to PHONE!!!!

Hello

I have a 2001 325xit with a Business CD that all of a sudden switches to phone during CD playback, and or any function. it happens every 20 to 30 seconds and the lengths it stays in that mode increase the longer you let it happen. Does anyone know why this is going on??

How do you know the button is fine?

There is a white/red/yellow dots wire at the steering wheel column coming from the volute spring. cut the wire and see if the problem persists.

I don't think it has anything to do with the steering wheel, unfortunately. I've had this problem for a while and have tried a few different solutions that temporarily worked, but eventually came back. I swapped my steering wheel, not for that purpose, but it didn't help. The problem is in the wiring for the phone that goes all the way to your trunk lid. There is a short somewhere telling your head unit that you are using your phone. The wires run under your center console and cupholders and if something was spilled in your cupholder and leaked down to the wires, then it can cause the short there. This was my first remedy because the previous owner had spilled some nasty, sticky soda in the cupholder and it shorted out those wires. That fixed my annoying PHONE display and the interruption of my music for a few months, then it came back. I searched on here for more answers and was told that it was the PIN 4 connector that was shorting out. My mechanic said he cut that connection and covered the end with electrical tape and that seemed to temporarily fix it. The problem did come back again and now I'm just going to swap out my head unit. Hopefully for a newer oem one so I can connect my ipod to it. Hope that helps.

Something is grounding PIN4 of the small 10-pin connector (bottom left) of your radio, remove this wire and all will be well.

I have replaced the head unit so i know that it is not the problem

the phone mute pin on the business cd is pin 4 of the 17 large pins, if this gets shorted to ground, then that causes the radio to mute and display "phone"

do you have a phone system installed?

no phone installed but it is pre-wired for the phone

very strange... could be a wiring issue with the phone wires, or the unit at fault. has anything changed lately? wiring wise? have you had the stereo out the dash?
