Please let me know if 8psi is too much for AUTO trans.
Thanks

ive done a ton of research regarding auto trannies + boost prior to buying a kit for my 330

first off, 8 PSI is way too much, auto trannies, whether you have a ZF or GM, hate power, period, and are very tempermental. ZF auto trannies found in the earlier year e46's tend to be a little weaker than their GM sucessors, you may want to look a little more into it, i would not recommend boosting a high milage auto tranny regardless of maintenance history or how much boost you are planning on running.

i would recommend running 5 PSI if you are worried about the longevity of your tranny, it would be considered the safe level, at 6 PSI you should still be ok, but there will be a decent amount of added strain on your tq converter and tranny, and 6.5 is where i would say is the MOST you should ever, go.

depending on your driving habits, you can adjust your boost level accordingly, if youre worried about the tranny breaking, and you have a lead foot, keep the boost down. remember, you only make peak power at redline, most centri units dont start making significant power until 4k+ range, so if you constantly dog your car, be leery. if you tend to baby your car most of the time, 6 PSI would probably be ok.

keep in mind that auto trannies fail even without boost, its a wear and tear part, and sadly a very expensive one to replace. understand the risks before going boost if you have an auto, and know that whether youre at 5 PSI or 6.5 PSI, the tranny will probably end up dying on you, difference between the two is just when it will die. results for boosted autos have varried between dying within the first 10k miles to lasting years, depending on your tranny's preexisting condition, maintenance history, and above all, YOUR DRIVING HABITS, the longevity of your transmission will vary.

8.5 PSI is way too much, only run 8.5 if youre planning on doing a 3rd pedal swap and have the funds to do it immediately after your tranny grenades

well...

i've been running c38 kit with 8PSI for 2 years now. No problems so far. Tho I'd like to swap the tranny in the future. If you search around there's plenty of SCed steps around.

Hello,

Boost is not the same as flow. I think everyone links the two together.

8 psi on a C30/GT7040 will be different than 8 psi on a C38/GTS8550, the larger charger will make more power at the same boost level.

Also boost is not what may cause potential harm to the transmission, it is torque.

Obviously the more boost you run the more Horsepower and Torque you will make. But it is not the boost that causes the issue. IE: running headers will show less boost but an increase in performance. I understand it is easier to use a boost figure since x boost will increase horsepower and torque but i just wanted to make sure everyone understands what may cause this.

The e46 models do not make much torque from factory, our C38 based kits for the 330 models do a good job of adding a decent amount of torque compared to stock.

In regards to level 1, there are a ton of guys running the standard level 1 on auto models with no issues. We have also done a few custom kits for auto's with slightly less boost (power and torque) at customers request.

However.

It is common knowledge that the automatic is weaker than the manual, this does not mean it will explode with an increase in performance but it is susceptible to failure. There may have been very few if any at all.

As a few people have already posted, they are running their kits for x miles and x years with no issues.
There was even a local track instructor who ran his auto wagon on the track for years with no issues.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

lol, I dont know if a torque converter and cooler is going to really help that much. But im excited to see you run 8.5 on a auto.
