24...328i

I bought it myself (though I did receive a substancial gift from my grandparents when I graduated college) and I'm still 24.

I can't believe how many 16-18 year-olds on this site drive cars that I couldn't begin to think about buying. I've had my pretty lucrative job since I got my BS in 2000 and I make as much as my mom after she's had her same job with the same corporation since she got her Masters in like 1970. She envies my car because she feels she can't afford it. I feel kind of bad about that, but damn, teenagers driving $40-something dollar cars is just weird.

No offense to all you :pimpin: young people.

Oh god I think i'm going to be sick.

I got mine at 25 and thought I was a spoiled bltch. I'm paying for less than half of mine. I don't think there's any shame in it as long as you don't rub it in other people's faces or think that your better than any one else because you drive a nice car.

What makes him a chump if you dont mind me asking?

If your parents offered to buy you a brand new M3 at the age of 16 or 17, would you say, "No thanks mom and dad but ill wait 5-7 years and buy my own" No, you probably wouldnt say that.... Sh*t, if your parents are wealthy enough to buy you a BMW at 16 or 17 then more power to you. No need to hate because you had to work hard for yours though.

I have both a real estate brokerage license and also a mortgage broker license. the first deal i did was the refinance of a 4.3 million dollar office building. its pretty simple stuff, gather paperwork, send it to a bunch of lenders and get replies. 1% of 4.3 million puts u above half the price of the car :).

16 - 89' 735iL (with just 23k miles in 1998...owned since new...but a maintenance nightmare and sold when my mom traded for a new a Lexus. We had kept it to be my first car for years, but it just wouldn't keep going)
16 - 97' V6 Camaro (lemon)
16 - 99' V6 Mustang
17 - 00' 323i

My parents bought the first two, the last one I paid for half of (but no, not all of it). Graduation present, really. 75% tuition on scholarship, and they were pleased about that.

Yes, my parents could've bought me a brand new ///M3, a year later. Or 330 (328 at the time). I almost did get the 328, but decided to opt for the cheaper 323 (and felt, from test driving, that the 5 speed kept it fast enough to be tolerable...the auto 323 was just too slow, and I wanted the 5 speed anyway).

Reasons?

First reason, insurance. I would get murdered on an ///M, and I'm already paying $2600/year for my "slow" 323. The 328 wasn't too much more, but I figured the best way to really enjoy and appreciate the car would be to get the cheapest one, and work my way up the model line in the future. How can an 18 year old truly appreciate a car as awesome as the ///M3, even if they paid for most or all of it? That's the way I feel, anyway.

Second reason, I have a nasty leadfoot and very little patience when it comes to traffic. I got the BMW under the condition that I would pay to maintain it, and pay for any repairs it needed, from damage I might cause. I'm just not tempered enough to responsibly handle an M3 on the streets yet. I'd be too tempted to use the 333 horses at every opportunity, generating LOTS of tickets and quite possibly an accident. I already speed bad enough in the 323 as it is.

Third, I don't feel deprived in the 323 as it is. Should I? Quite a few of my friends drive ****ty early 90's model cars, ranging from a 1990 Bronco II, to a 94 Taurus GL, to a 92 Explorer, to the gamut of older civics. One even drives a minivan! Only two at the moment have what I would consider decent cars, one has a 97 318ti and the other has a 92 ES300 in near perfect condition. Strangest thing is, several of these kids' parents could afford to buy them nicer cars, easily, but exercise enormous restraint. It's a really bizarre phenomenon. :)

Fourth, few people can actually recognize what type of car mine is other than that it's a BMW. They see BMW and automatically assume it's an extremely fast $45,000 car, and then I get **** about it. Case in point: while at a gas station with my friend in his 97' 318ti, a guy drives up in a late model acura TL with several modifications, obviously worth more than my friend's 10k bimmer. He sees us, walks up, and with a totally solemn look on his face, says, "Damn, I wish I could afford a car like yours. I bet it's fast as hell. What do you think of my ride?" It gets worse...ranging from people don't even know what a BMW is, to those who think they know everything but are actually rather ignorant (like one kid who insisted that my car had a 2.3L engine, and that I was totally wrong when I corrected him, saying it was 2.5L). Then there are those who think my car has a 3.23L engine, or 323cc engine. It just goes on and on. My point being, there is NO shame in driving a 323/325, or even a 318! (unless you try to race any serious sports cars. lol)

Anyway, my already too-long post must end now.

I was 17 when I got my 330i------parents bought it for me because of my performance in highschool.

I am 20 now

I'll tell you what tho, having a beemer is unbeleivable in highschool, and even in college.......BUT.......with this comes sooo much attention and sooo many haters. In highschool I had alot of ladies loving my car, then some jelous prick keyed the hell outta it. In college same sorta thing, I recently got my f-ing lock drilled out.....

U know what I resorted too?
yeah thats right, I drive a wrangler, which I bought myself by the way, because I can't afford for my BMW to get keyed, hit, drilled, etc..

how I bought my wrangler, well, my buddy hooked me up with a sweet job as a loan officer at a Morgage Company.....this results in a good amount of money.

As for who paid for it... it's none of your business.

I don't see why it makes a differnece whether I payed for it or my parents did. I thought we were all here to enjoy and talk about a wonderful automobile. To those who paid for it themselves, congratulaions for working hard and achieving your goals and to those whose parents bought it for them, be very greatful for what you have, cause most people don't. Also those that paid for their cars themselves at a young age, don't forget that in many cases, if you hadn't been brought up in the life you were, you wouldn't have the means to make 100k dollars inside of a year.

Thanks,
Adam

Lol. I'm the old one I think. Just bought one at 32 years of age. 330cic. My wife and I live in Northern California and gross around 200k a year in salary, not counting investments. Have a crappy 1600 sq ft home in Marin that costs around 750k-800k (the housing prices here are outrageous). With that, we still only bought a used 330cic. Although, we paid cash.

Money just doesn't go very far now adays.

17 Now...
16-19 - 330Ci (handed to me by my parents for good grades)
19-2-....- Who knows...probably another hand-off from my parents
2- & on...After Grad school...and a little step-off from my parents...I will have my own cars.
Planned cars for my garage:
1999 Red on Black Ferrari 355 GTS
2001 MB CL600 (My dad currently has this...)
Equivialent of a new M3
I will have these cars...don't worry, but until then, the keys will have to be handed to me by my parents.
Also...why are all of you so against having cars given to kids from their parents. If your my age and worked for your car, damn, I have a lot of respect for you. But if you didn't pay for it...why are you bagged on so much? I get good grades and I'm a good kid, does that mean much? I just don't understand the concept of bagging on kids (yes, I'm still a kid...I'm only 17) that get cars from their parents. What do you expect me/us to do...say no mom, no dad, don't get me the brand new 330Ci...I want an 82 Corolla with a faded hood and the T, O, T, and A gone from TOYOTA (YO)...:dunno:

I think I'm going to change my login to Grandpa. I didn't even own a car till I was 30. And that was way back in 1985, and the car was a '69 Cutlass. It had a great engine, and the body would have been pretty good if it hadn't been kept outside in Philadelphia for 16 years. For the record, my parents didn't buy it for me, but then it only cost $100.

By 1990 I was ready to move up to a new Honda Civic. You can not begin to appreciate what it was like to step up to that car. You could roll up the windows and no water would come in when it rained. I still have my Honda, and I'll give to my son when he turns 16.

I'm 48 and can afford to buy what I want, but my new 325i is so nice, it is hard to imagine wanting more. My son is trying to get me to buy chrome rims and put green neon lights underneath, but I'll let him save up his money and inflict this on my poor old Civic.

So what's the pattern? '69 Cutlass, '90 Civic, '03 BMW, I'm just hoping my next ride won't be in a hearse.

Cool, some more old people like me. There are benefits about living in California that I would have trouble turning down for a large home. I think a 10,000 sq ft home would be upwards to 3-4 million dollars here. Of course, if I were to cash out and move to the midwest I think my wife and I could retire comfortably.

We are planning on moving to Sacramento soon and when we sell our home I'm planning on getting at least a M3 Convertible for a Z8. Paid in cash.

He probably could have bought me a car when I was 16 (hey, I had good grades too! :eeps: ), but instead just let me ride in an old station wagon (and sometimes his 3series) ... man, sometimes I still can't believe that I'm riding in my *own* BMW now ... and if you guys think your rides are expensive down in the US, try $49K+15% tax for a 325ci here in Canada, after paying 46% income taxes... if you think that a similar job here as in the US will get you a similar salary, but in CAN$...

Let's see. Had to get married, get a house, buy property, get a divorce, sell property, sell house, get a condo, get married, get the M3, get another house, next -> get a X5 to compliment M3. What next? Well, I was 35 when I got the M and paying for it myself (with wife). No help from anyone. Worked hard to afford the things I now have in life. To the young people who were given the chance to own a BMW from their parents - more power to you guys. I don't begrudge others of what they got. The only thing that I get pissed at are those who have been given things in life and then turn around and act like they are better than everyone else. To all of those (not saying anyone here is like that), learn what it means to earn things for yourself. I don't treat people who make less than me any different than people who make the same or more than me.

Just my opinon, for what its worth.

This post is just now turning into a whining post. Some people are fortunate to have parents that buy them anything they want. Good for them, which sucks for those who are not as fortunate but you, have to work with the hand you have been dealt. This of course now leads us into those who do not appreciate it as much as those who bought it themselves and what not. If your parents bought a BMW for you, then you are a lucky SOB. If you bought it yourself and pay for EVERYTHING yourself, than my hat is off to you.

Have to agree with the earlier comment about teens doing dumb **** and having cars taken away... BTW I am 17 and have a JB/BL M3 on its way. My story? Freshmen year in public high school was pretty easy..too easy, so I went on my own and found some private schools in the area. Applied as a transfer, accepted, and now I work my ass off non-stop. With my Junior year almost finished, I will have taken 10 Advanced Placement tests (6 next week), 1490 SAT, 800 Bio, etc. I live on caffeine and di.fm, sleep 3-4 hrs a night, and work like a b.itch. Parents told me if I got a 1500 SAT they'd buy the M3, so I boosted my score 140 pts. and they let it slide :) Hoping (more like praying) to go to Oxford or Stanford, and will probably graduate with 17 AP's. The M I guess is a little reward for my effort :D My parents have told me they would prefer me studying instead of working, otherwise I'm not a lazy mofo (but I'll def. need a job this summer for all the mods floating around my head). Are my parents "well-off"? You could say that. Have I not earned my M3 at this point? I beg to differ. Now if you'll excuse I have to get back to US History, have an SATII Tomm

You're fine...I respect what you had to do in order to get to where you are now. My dad worked his ass off before he could buy his benz...his first car was a $9,000 dodge...then a cheap buick...then a 4runner...and finally, his brand spankin new (at the time) 2000 e320. Me on the other hand, I work at my parent's restaurant every once in awhile and earn (I use that word lightly) the cash to pay off my bmw.

I am not saying that all these guys have good jobs, but I know people that are excellent Software Engineers at the age of 19 or so. They all make great money. That's just the people in my field though. I'm not sure about other fields.

Also, it is possible that they may have been saving money since they were very young.

here's how i did it: when i was 19, i bought a '95 M3 (this was in 1998). i didn't have enough credit to get it on my own so i my sister actually co-signed for me. i lived with my parents then and was in school (paid for by scholarships/parents) so i really had no expenses. i worked about 30 hours a week and was easily able to make my $500 car payment and $200 insurance payment. the rest of my income was used for going out, etc.

times have changed a lot since then. i graduated and i now work my a$$ off to live the lifestyle that i enjoy. of course, being married and having two incomes helps, but i own my own business too.

although i had some help along the way, i was taught to work harder than the average person if i wanted to stand out and make something outta myself.

I am very surprised at how people under age of 23 / 25 can buy new BMWs on their own, since generally you are either in or just finishing college/university at this age; and part-time jobs would not cover the cost of a Bimmer, unless parents are paying for absolutely everything else (tuition, clothes, going out, music/movies, electronics, fast food, vacations etc......)

And lets not forget ridiculously high car insurance for guys under 25 years. Anyone under 25 yrs with a new Bimmer should consider themselves very lucky.

as a 17-19 year old it is a lot easier to make a car payment than a 25-28 year old because the younger crowd doesnt have the bills that the older guys do. us younger kids either live with parents or at college so the only expenses we have are really going out, food, whatever. so if you work 30 hours a week give or take you can easily make a grand a month roughly and its all pure cash to spend, thats how all these "16 and 17 year olds" pay for their cars. if you have a 500 a month payment, thats easily made for a kid my age as long as you work pretty hard for it, its not that difficult

Once again, to all those who have been graced with parents who are very generous, I tip my hat to you guys. I'm 35y/o and just bought my first BMW (M3 convertible). Priorities are what is important here. Judging from the responses here, most people are living at home (don't take offense if you are living on your own). My priority was a home. I wanted to be out from my parents wing and on my own. I'm not putting anyone down here. I just don't like it when people are given things and they flaunt it here. If you can afford it, congrats. If your parents gave it to you and you are responsible enough to not flaunt it at people who worked hard for it, congrats. If you are a spoiled brat who thinks that the world owes you something, grow up. The world owes no one anything.

Once again, just my opinion.

I agree with Jafo. I have an issue with a few people on this forum that rip on 323's and 325's and other cars that aren't M3's. Looking over this thread, I've noticed that some of the people who rip on those cars are ones that didn't buy the car themselves. Anyway, for many people buying a nice car isn't a priority although they really like them. I know it wasn't a priority for me. Otherwise, my wife and I could have moved in rent free to one of my parent's condos in San Jose. Instead, we invested, bought a house in Marin, and eventually got around to buying a 40k car. I've thought many times about living rent free and just blowing my cash on a nice Ferrari or something but I don't think I'd be able to look at my parents with a straight face. "Thanks for the free rent, like my new Ferrari?"

jafo
05-04-2003, 10:06 PM
Wallrat,
My thoughts exactly..... While I have never been in a position for my parents giving me a new BMW (and I have to give them respect for what they could afford and what pushed me to become), I have never looked down on anyone who had a lesser car than I did. I treat people who have less and more than I do with the same respect - although if it were given to them and they flaunt it, I simply abuse them. I believing in giving credit where credit is due. Once again, if someone is given something and is very respectful of it, I give the respect for understanding where it came from and knowing that others are striving to work for that achievement. To those who are graced with the "goods" and think they earned it by just being born, grow up and see that life is "eventually" going to abuse you. There are people out have worked hard and have set "other" priorities in their lives. Enough of my "old-man" lectures... :)

Once again, the opinion of one of the "old men" on the board...

JAFO

P.S. I guess there are a few of us out there that still have (or grew up with) the "old-school" mentality....

Although, I wasn't a Bimmer fan until recently, and also have a Grand Cherokee.

How many of these teenagers have: a wife that doesn't work, 2 kids, 5 bedroom house (2002 also), and live well. Not too many.

I commend the ones that did it with little/no help. At least it show that some people in America still have a decent work ethic.

i go to a school in socal called harvard-westlake...its on coldwater canyon, i know that at least one guy in this forum attended my school. i should mention though that not all the ppl at my school have a car like i do so dont flame the school. there is one other kid in tenth grade that has an M3 but i doubt he appreciates his car as much as i do...im sure that i cant even appreciate my car as much as i should because im so young and inexperienced in driving other cars.
