I have no idea where to begin with speaker upgrades. I got a fairly good headunit (Clarion vxd935vd) but would like to upgrade my spreakers and add some base.

Any ideas?? I would like some knowlege before i venture into the retail store and get raped by the sales person.

In other words...what is the best set up for a 330ci and brand suggestions.

Thanks

Tony

Since you are just starting out here is what I recommend you do.

Find a few stereo shops where you live and audition a lot of different brands of speakers. Bring in some of your favorite CDs so you can listen to music you are familiar with.

Make a commitment to yourself that you will not buy anything the same day you walk into the store. This way you won't get caught up in the sales and marketing trap of the stores.

Once you find some speakers that you like, ask the salesperson if he can arrange for you to listen to this brand in some customer's cars. This way you can hear the speakers in a car instead of just in the store. Believe me, there could be a big difference in the sound.

As for recommended brands, ther are a lot. Here are a list of good ones that I think you should start with.
Focal, Diamond Audio, A/D/S, MB Quart, Boston Acoustics, Alpine, JL Audio.

Search the old threads, plenty of info there. In a nutshell, if you want more bass but don't need to shake windows for miles, JL Audio Stealthboxes install the rear factory locations. For the front components, the brands BMWsoundQ recommended are a great start, although my personal opinion is that Alpine makes good headunits, not good speakers.

I don't know if you already have a separate amp in your system, or if your headunit is powered, but also realize that new speakers, especially subs, will require a new amp to power them properly...
